Hawkeye star Hailee Steinfeld reportedly volunteered extensively at the start of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
According to a blind item from Crazy Days and Nights that is said to be about Steinfeld, the actor reportedly volunteered between 12-15 hours almost every day of the week delivering groceries at the start of the pandemic. Beyond that, Steinfeld reportedly spent the last year helping people find food and shelter, while also putting them in touch with different agencies and resources. She has also reportedly given out her personal phone number to people so they can reach her for help 24/7.
Steinfeld recently entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Kate Bishop in Marvel’s Disney+ series, Hawkeye, where she became the protege of a reluctant Clint Barton/Hawkeye, portrayed by Jeremy Renner. The series is loosely based on the Marvel Comics series of the same name by Matt Fraction and David Aja. Following the premiere of Hawkeye on Disney+, Steinfeld was briefly listed as the most popular celebrity on IMDb thanks to her role as Kate Bishop.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has described Steinfeld as the “dream version” of Kate Bishop, previously confirming that she didn’t even audition for the role. “We were very, very lucky that Hailee was open to this because we very much believed that she was sort of the prototype for the character, and as occasionally happens, the dream version of the character agrees to do it,” Feige said. “So I think there were some early meetings and discussions, but we were very thankful that she wanted to jump into this role because we had a feeling that she would be great, and she is.”
Hawkeye consisted of six, hour-long episodes, though the series was originally intended to be a spinoff feature film exploring the Avenger in depth. However, with the inclusion of the Battle of New York, the introduction of new villains to the MCU and the relationship between Clint and Kate, the story was deemed too big for a solo film alone.
“The big question was, ‘How are we going to fit all of this into a two-hour timeframe?’ We have an Avenger whose backstory we haven’t quite had time to explore yet,” producer Trinh Tran said in a previous interview. “We also have to introduce a new character [Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop], as well as allow enough time for them to bond and create that special dynamic that everybody finds so appealing in the comics. So, in moving it over, it allowed us six hours, three times as much time, which really gave us the creative flexibility we needed to tell the story.”
The first season of Hawkeye is streaming now on Disney+.
