WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Peacemaker Episode 6, “Murn After Reading,” now streaming on HBO Max.
Episode 6 of Peacemaker reveals that Senator Goff was a host to a pretty important Butterfly, and now it’s found its way into a new host: Detective Song. Another revelation is that alien Goff is actually female and the leader of the Butterflies, which means her taking over Song’s body has the potential to destroy the A.R.G.U.S. team.
After the A.R.G.U.S. team was sent to assassinate the Goff family under the belief they were Butterflies, Chris/Peacemaker decided to take the bug form of Goff home with him as his newest pet, which he actually took great care of. Chris communicated with it on a friendly level and fed it the classic Butterfly goo, but ultimately their time together was cut short when the Evergreen police stormed into Chris’ trailer and Goff was able to escape her jar thanks to Vigilante falling on it.
But right before this unfortunate separation, Goff attempted to tell Chris that the Butterflies wanted peace by drawing a peace sign with the Butterfly goo on her jar. It seems to have been a ruse for an escape though, since after taking over Song’s body, Goff proceeds to call other Butterflies and invade the available bodies at the Evergreen Police Department and county jail. Goff doesn’t even try to hide the fact that Song is now an alien. She proceeds to refer to Song in the third person and speak in obscure riddles, which confuses her partner into thinking she has brain damage, but it didn’t matter since they were all going to be Butterflies by the end of the day.
Goff’s choice to call on the other Butterflies and infiltrate the police department and jail does seem like a spur of the moment decision, based on her past host. Alien Goff probably had more power as a senator than a county detective, and may have slowly been incorporating her followers into other bodies over time. Now though, she senses the urgency of the situation with the A.R.G.U.S. team aware of the Butterflies’ presence on Earth, and makes the emotional, yet dangerous decision to build an army specifically targeting Chris and the team.
Murn’s ally Captain Locke was an asset in protecting Chris from going to prison, which means hiding the diary Amanda Waller had Adebayo plant in Chris’ trailer that frames him for the murder of the initial Butterfly and the bottling company massacre. Goff using Locke to reveal the contents of the diary to the public only stalls Project Butterfly as they now have to deal with their internal betrayal and Chris being a wanted man. Before Project Butterfly existed, Goff was all about world domination, but now it seems personal.
With all the power and information Goff obtains now as Detective Song, there is so little that can stop the Butterflies. Murn is unaware that Captain Locke is a Butterfly, which means he can be easily swayed by whatever Song has ordered Locke to tell him. Although, it is easy to tell a Butterfly from a human based on their odd theatrics and mannerisms. Harcourt was able to figure out that Murn is a Butterfly, so it might not be hard for Murn to see his own kind in Locke. Chris also still has his X-ray vision helmet, which can help when identifying Butterflies, but doesn’t do much in defeating them.
And while the A.R.G.U.S. team may soon be mourning the death of their cause, it’s worth noting that an incredible character such as Detective Song died the moment Goff took over her body. Song was a hilarious, yet stern addition to the show and her constant quarrels with Auggie Smith made fans love her character, and hate his character more. Now, she is a robotic, world-domination-seeking host that has zero humanity or morality left in her.
