Finn, the stormtrooper who became a Rebel hero in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, never became a Jedi on the screen in spite of what many expected for his future. One fan has rectified that, painting Finn as a noble Jedi knight in full regalia.
The artwork, originally shared on Twitter by artist Andres Bellorin in January 2021, has once again been making the rounds and showing how much the fandom still appreciates the breakout character. It features a realistic depiction of Finn’s actor John Boyega, wielding a green lightsaber and wrapped in a royal purple cowl. Bellorin captioned the image saying, “I thought my man John Boyega deserved a lot more character development in the sequel trilogy and since they already showed Finn as a force user anyways, here’s my concept/Fan Art of Jedi Master Finn.”

Boyega made his first appearance as Finn in 2015’s Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, which kicked off the trilogy that served as a sequel to the original Star Wars films. A stormtrooper who had never been given a name beyond the ID code FN-2187, Finn struck up a friendship with pilot Poe Dameron and then Rey, securing his loyalty to the Rebel Army. Promotion for the film included a scene in which Finn wields a lightsaber, leading many fans to believe he would train to be a Jedi.
Instead, the trilogy focused on Rey’s Jedi training under Luke Skywalker, while Finn was sent down a different path. In the third movie, The Rise of Skywalker, Finn was revealed to be Force-sensitive, but there was no indication of how this would shape his life going forward. Boyega himself expressed frustration with his role and was vocally critical of Disney’s handling of actors of color in Star Wars: “…What I would say to Disney is do not bring out a black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are and then have them pushed to the side. It’s not good.”
Boyega also described original plans for Episode IX, pointing out that he would have played a larger role and led a revolution of ex-stormtroopers. Whether or not this would have precluded his Jedi Master heritage, it’s clear that fans are still interested in other possibilities for Finn’s story.
