Chris Evans‘ Captain America may no longer be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that doesn’t mean Evans won’t return in the future. With Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness rumored to contain multiple unexpected cameos, fans are theorizing Evans may reprise his role as none other than the Human Torch from Fantastic Four.
While the 2005 movie is not part of the larger continuity of the MCU, there have been talks over the past year of non-MCU cameos occurring in the Doctor Strange sequel. With the multiverse only beginning to be explored and Spider-Man: No Way Home bringing in characters from other franchises, it’s not far-fetched to assume a similar event could transpire in the Multiverse of Madness, especially considering the recent acquisition of the X-Men and Fantastic Four by Marvel.
Though the original Fantastic Four film may have received less than glowing reviews from both critics and fans alike, the obvious standout of the movie was Chris Evans as Johnny Storm. The character was already a fan favorite in the comics, and Evans brought a sense of nonchalance and spirit to the character that resonated with audiences. Considering he largely provided the film’s comedic relief, it would be interesting to see Evans back in the MCU in a role that so heavily juxtaposes his version of Captain America.
Some may say rumors of Evans returning to the MCU as the playboy superhero are far-fetched, but there have been reports of Evans negotiating a new contract with Marvel Studios, and he may appear in more supporting roles in the future. Another piece of potential evidence to support the rumor comes from talks of Marvel Studios bringing Jessica Alba as Invisible Woman into the MCU; with both Evans and Alba potentially appearing in future MCU installments, it’s reasonable to assume Evans could be donning flames once again.
Aside from fans desperately wanting Evans back in the MCU in some fashion, Evans himself claimed he would be open to exploring a new chapter within the Marvel continuity. And with the success of the multiversal cameos in No Way Home, fans are craving more appearances from non-MCU characters. After all, Evan Peters’ Quicksilver was introduced in WandaVision, and though there turned out to be no relation between that character and the actual Quicksilver from the X-men franchise, that element was one of the most talked-about moments of the season.
With Marvel moving in new directions as Phase Four becomes more fleshed out, fans will likely be delighted to see Evans cameo as Human Torch, especially given the fact that he’s already played a main role in the MCU as Captain America. It would no doubt bring the comedy Human Torch is known for, as well as a sense of nostalgia for superhero movies when the Marvel universe was in its infancy. And though audiences likely won’t know for sure if Human Torch will return until the premiere of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it’s exciting to imagine the possible routes Marvel could take with reintroducing past fan favorites into the MCU.
