Catwoman star Halle Berry shared some kind words about Zoë Kravitz ahead of her upcoming debut as the new Selina Kyle/Catwoman in Matt Reeves’ The Batman.
“Just be courageous and bring her own interpretation to the role,” Berry told Pop Culture about what she hopes to see Kravitz do with the role. “I think she’s going to be an amazing Catwoman. And I can’t wait to see what her interpretation of that is.”
Fans may recall that Berry portrayed the feline antihero in 2004’s Catwoman, a role that famously earned her a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress that year. Berry’s latest comments build on similar sentiments she shared back in 2019, when it was first announced Kravitz had been cast. “Special shout-out to your new CatWoman,” the Oscar winner tweeted at the time. “The eternally graceful & extremely bad ass Zoe Kravitz. Keep shining Queen & welcome to the family!”
In recent weeks, Kravitz has opened up about what it’s been like to portray the character, as well as admitted she’s excited for fans to actually see Selina’s transformation into Catwoman. “To see a person like Selina really get in touch with her power and become Catwoman? That’s a journey that I’m really interested in exploring,” the actor said at the time. “We haven’t quite seen that yet. We usually meet Catwoman, and it’s either a very quick transformation — an overnight thing — or she’s already there. And so to find the emotional journey that brings her to the place where she is making the choice to be this person, is what I’m really excited about.”
In regard to how the actor prepared to step into the role of Selina, Kravitz previously revealed it was equal parts mental and physical. “To spend a year of your life, and it’s very physically demanding… I had to be in very specific shape, and there’s a pandemic going on,” Kravitz shared. “I’m being zipped into a catsuit every day at 7 a.m., working 12-hour days, and then coming home and working out. It was intense.”
A photoshoot for The Batman released in December 2021 also revealed that Kravitz’s version of the character will have a very different look than both Berry’s version of the character and Michelle Pfeiffer’s interpretation in 1992’s Batman Returns. Those images showed Kravitz with short hair, cat eye makeup and wearing a more utilitarian-looking leather jumpsuit. Kravitz’s Catwoman was also depicted with long nails and holding a whip.
Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman releases in theaters on March 4.
