WARNING: The following contains major spoilers from Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett “Chapter 6: From the Desert Comes a Stranger,” streaming now on Disney+.
Cameos flew thick and fast in The Book of Boba Fett Season 1, Episode 6, “From the Desert Comes a Stranger.” Indeed, there were so many notable appearances from so many Star Wars characters that Boba Fett himself was limited to just a scene or two. But none of them made the same impression as Cad Bane, the blue-skinned gunslinger who looked as if he stepped straight out of a Sergio Leone movie. Unlike the episode’s copious other cameos, this was Bane’s first appearance in a live-action Star Wars effort, which was cause for celebration in and of itself.
The character has a far richer history than his brief appearance here suggests, and indeed his past with Boba Fett makes him the ideal foil for the season finale next week. The Book of Boba Fett has struggled at times to put a face to Boba’s adversaries, with the spice-dealing Pyke Corporation a collection of anonymous masked figures and Tatooine’s biker gangs often equally indistinguishable. With Bane, they may have found the perfect villain.
Who Is Cad Bane in The Book of Boba Fett?
Cad Bane first appeared in Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 2, Episode 1, “Holocron Heist,” and from that moment, the show had a winner. Bane was a bounty hunter, who had risen to success in his field following the death of Jango Fett in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones and become one of the most feared bounty hunters in the galaxy. His past before then hasn’t yet been revealed, though he hails from the planet Duros with the natives’ signature blue skin and red pupiless eyes.
Bane made numerous appearances throughout The Clone Wars and quickly became one of the series’ signature villains. Though he possessed no Force abilities, he proved smart and ruthless, giving Jedi like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker a worthy foe. His run continued into Star Wars: The Bad Batch Season 1, Episode 8, “Reunion” where he successfully abducted Omega from under the watch of her protectors. His appearance in The Book of Boba Fett‘s “Stranger” comes a full 25 years later in the timeline, showing him all but unchanged and still working for the wrong side.
What Is Cad Bane’s Connection to Boba Fett?
Bane worked very well as a stand-in for Boba Fett in The Clone Wars, displaying the same mercenary attitude and disregard for life that Boba did in his earliest appearances in the saga. He cared only for getting paid and took pride in seeing a job through, making him a ruthless and implacable adversary. The canonical Star Wars Helmet Collection #41 mentions that Cad Bane was briefly mentored by Jango Fett before the elder bounty hunter’s death. Bane and Boba first crossed paths in a Coruscant prison in Clone Wars Season 4, Episode 15, “Deception.” The young bounty hunter started a riot as a distraction to let Bane escape, and Bane subsequently began to mentor him at one point.
That changed with an unaired story arc that would have appeared in the eighth season of The Clone Wars had the show not been cancelled after seven. It would have ended with a stand-off between Cad Bane and Boba Fett, which would explain the origin of the dent in Boba’s helmet. Showrunner Dave Filoni revealed a sizzle reel of the showdown at Star Wars Celebration Orlando 2017. “Stranger” may very well herald the canonical appearance of that fight, which it echoed in its three-way fight between Bane and the law officers in Freetown. That would make a fitting conclusion to The Book of Boba Fett’s first season, as well as opening the door for future live-action appearances from his fan-favorite adversary.
To see Boba Fett and Cad Bane’s long-awaited confrontation, watch The Book of Boba Fett’s Season 1 finale, which will stream Feb. 9 on Disney+.
