Bucky Barnes actor Sebastian Stan revealed how Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige first told him he was going to be in Black Panther.
In an interview with Esquire, Stan was presented with a statement saying, “Sebastian learned he was going to be in Black Panther while standing at baggage claim with Kevin Feige after a flight, where Feige offhandedly mentioned it.” Stan responded, “Completely true! I think it was like on the set of Civil War and he goes, ‘Oh yeah, by the way, you know we’re going to have you come in early next week. You know, you’re going to do this scene with [Black Panther director] Ryan Coogler.'”
Stan also reflected on what it’s like being a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the nature of its secrecy, and finding out his involvement in potential future projects. “It’s always been like that by the way. It’s always been offhanded,” he added. “Even getting the role back in the day was sort of offhanded.”
Stan’s appearance in Black Panther was in the film’s post-credits scene, where Bucky was shown living peacefully in Wakanda after Shuri helped him recover from his time as the brainwashed assassin, the Winter Soldier. This scene followed on from the dramatic events of Captain America: Civil War, where Bucky was framed for the death of King T’Chaka and went on the run after Baron Zemo’s attempt to regain control of the super-soldier.
Stan joined the MCU back in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger as Bucky, Steve Rogers’ best friend and a sergeant in the US Army, and has since appeared in a further eight MCU projects. While Stan is unsure whether he will show up in the MCU again, the star has already said that he’d love to reappear, and the future Captain America 4 is a potential opening for Bucky to return.
Most recently, Stan appeared in the Disney+ series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, which explored his trauma and grief from being the Winter Soldier and losing Captain America in Avengers: Endgame. Discussing whether he feels Bucky got justice, Stan responded, “He had plenty of moments and we got him to a good place, so that’s what I’m happy about.”
