The world of anime features thousands of cool and compelling characters, and many of them are part of a larger family. Some characters are largely defined by their relationships with their brothers and sisters, their parents, their children, or even their grandparents in some cases. Some anime families can be rather odd.
Certain anime children clearly take after their parents, such as Naruto inheriting his mother’s temper and Gohan being a powerful hero like his legendary father Goku. Other anime children, whether young or fully grown, are clearly much different than either or both of their parents, in terms of appearance, combat abilities, personality, and more.
10 Laxus Dreyar Differed Greatly From Ivan (Fairy Tail)
Laxus Dreyar is one of the strongest wizards of the Fairy Tail guild who also appreciates his guild’s emphasis on the power of friendship. His grandfather Makarov runs the entire guild, while Laxus’ father, Ivan, is a different matter entirely.
Ivan Dreyar’s sinister powers are quite different from his son’s electric abilities. Most importantly, Ivan is a selfish, deceptive, and manipulative person deep down, while Laxus is not. For a time, Laxus was also somewhat villainous, but that wasn’t his true self by any means. He’s much more like his grandfather instead.
9 Edward Elric Only Inherited His Father’s Hair & Eye Color (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)
It’s true that Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood‘s Edward Elric and his brother Alphonse inherited their father’s distinct gold hair and eyes. Over time, Ed even slowly began to resemble Hohenheim in some regards. As a whole, however, Ed is very different than his father as a hot-tempered adventurer who’s never afraid of a fight.
Ed and his father are often at odds, and even though Ed greatly loved his mother Trisha, he didn’t seem to inherit anything from her. Ed and his mother looked completely different and Ed certainly didn’t inherit Trisha’s easygoing disposition, either.
8 Meliodas Opposes His Royal Father (The Seven Deadly Sins)
Meliodas is the captain of the Seven Deadly Sins squad, but he’s also the prince of Hell and the son of the terrifying demon king. For a time, Meliodas was loyal to Hell, but he later got involved with the angel Elizabeth and switched sides. Now he and his father are totally at odds.
Meliodas looks and acts nothing like his titanic father and he wants nothing to do with the demon king. He and his good friend Ban spent time in Hell fighting the demon king, but that didn’t bring father and son closer together by any means. Meliodas is a hero, period.
7 Kotaro Shimura Is No Hero (My Hero Academia)
Even Pro Heroes have spouses and children in My Hero Academia, such as Endeavor having multiple children to produce an heir who can surpass All Might. Meanwhile, the seventh wielder of One For All, Nana Shimura, had a son named Kotaro. She went to great lengths to protect Kotaro from the wrath of All For One.
The bitter Kotaro felt alienated from his mother and grew to deeply resent the world of Pro Heroes. He was a tyrannical and cruel father to his son Tenko, and this helped drive Tenko to the dark side, which resulted in Kotaro’s demise. Thus, Tomura Shigaraki was born.
6 Sakura Haruno Barely Resembles Her Parents (Naruto)
Naruto‘s Sakura Haruno is the only member of Team 7 with two living and safe parents, as opposed to Naruto and Sasuke, who are orphans. Sakura once took her parents for granted and found them a bit annoying, which disturbed Sasuke greatly. Sakura doesn’t know how good she has it.
Drama aside, it’s clear that Sakura bears almost no resemblance to her mother and father. She has her mother’s eyes and inherited some hair color from her father, but aside from that, she and her parents look wildly different.
5 Orihime Inoue Isn’t Like Her Cruel Parents (Bleach)
Ichigo’s good friend Orihime Inoue had a terrible upbringing. While her parents are never actually seen, Bleach‘s narrative briefly explained what they were like. The anime and manga differ on the details, but in short, the Inoues were abusive and lousy parents, prompting their son Sora to take his baby sister Orihime and run away.
Orihime is nothing like her parents. Instead, she is a kind, altruistic, and cheerful young lady who has a whimsical sense of fun and a deep sense of commitment to all her friends. She would never dream of hurting anyone — in fact, she will even heal her enemies without being asked.
4 Kyoko Hori Is The Real Adult Of The Household (Horimiya)
Kyoko Hori has a fairly happy and safe household in Horimiya and she’s a responsible big sister for her charming little brother, Souta. She and her parents don’t have any serious drama going on, but then again, she and her father tend to annoy each other.
Unlike her goofy father and easygoing mother, Kyoko Hori is a tough and responsible adolescent who is quick to deal with anyone who crosses her, including her father if it comes to that. She’s certainly different than her silly dad, that’s for sure.
3 Chitoge Kirisaki Clashes With Her Busy Mother (Nisekoi)
Nisekoi‘s Chitoge Kirisaki is a lovable tsundere anime heroine, and that leads to all kinds of shenanigans with her earnest but slightly dense false boyfriend, Raku Ichijo. Chitoge has her strengths and weaknesses but one of her biggest issues is her conflict with her mother, Hana Kirisaki.
For one thing, Chitoge certainly didn’t inherit her mother’s dark hair, but most of all, Hana is a stern and aloof person while Chitoge is more friendly and intense. Chitoge desperately wants to spend more time with her ultra-busy mother, but Hana usually has no time for it.
2 Shoya Ishida Is Quite Different From His Mother (A Silent Voice)
Shoya Ishida was a real bully in 6th grade, and he harassed people so he could stave off boredom and make his life exciting at the expense of others in A Silent Voice. His flustered mother Miyako didn’t know what to do about her troublemaker son, but she never gave up on him.
Shoya lacked his mother’s hair color, mature attitude, and kindness at first. He also didn’t seem intent on finding a job or pursuing any hobbies, as opposed to his mother, who was a passionate hairstylist. Later, however, Shoya sought to make amends for all his antics and Miyako appreciated that.
1 Thorfinn Karlsefni Sought Action Rather Than Peace (Vinland Saga)
Vinland Saga‘s Thorfinn may be the son of Thors, the “troll of Jom,” but the resemblance is minimal. To begin with, the young Thorfinn sought adventure as a Viking warrior only for Thors to inform him that Thorfinn had no enemies and no reason to fight. Father and son could never agree on that matter.
Even after Thors gave his life for Thofinn’s sake, Thorfinn sought a life of violence and revenge anyway, going against his late father’s will. Thorfinn also had a much different attitude than his father as a bitter and cynical loner who cared only for his own interests. His dark attitude also made him quite different than his kind and homely mother Helga back in Iceland. Fortunately, all this changed as Thorfinn grew older.
