Star Wars KOTOR: How Long Does It Take to Beat & Complete? | CBR

In September 2021, Aspyr Media announced it is developing an enhanced remake of the acclaimed Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Released in 2003 for the original Xbox and PC, KOTOR is universally acclaimed and considered one of the best Star Wars video games ever made. It inspired both a direct sequel in 2005’s Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords and a popular MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic.

The first KOTOR is a sprawling adventure, with plenty of side-quests and different morality paths to keep players occupied for hours. Here’s how long it takes to beat Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, whether just playing through the main quest or fully completing the game, side-quests and both morality paths as the player follows either the Light or Dark Side of the Force.

Beating Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic’s Main Quest

The villain of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

The core story of Knights of the Old Republic takes place approximately four millennia before the events of the Star Wars prequel trilogy, with the Galactic Republic and Jedi Order pushed to the brink of total annihilation by the merciless Sith Empire. A valiant Jedi Knight named Bastila Shan launches a decisive strike on the Sith flagship, defeating Darth Revan. However, his apprentice Darth Malak proves to be even more deadly, and takes the role of the main antagonist in the game. Players control a Force-sensitive Republic soldier seeking to save the galaxy or plunge it into darkness, depending on which side of the Force they decide to pursue.

Just focusing on this main quest and forgoing the side missions that allow players to explore the galaxy’s Outer Rim and learn more about Malak can take anywhere from 28-35 hours. The decision to follow the Light or Dark path weighs somewhat on the playthrough time. Most of the game’s length is spent obtaining pieces of a Star Map to take them to secret locations at the fringes of the galaxy, which includes five planets in all, not counting the starting world of Taris. The rest of KOTOR is spent on Malak’s flagship, leading to the final battle at the galaxy’s edge.

Completing Everything In Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

KOTOR-Bastila

There are plenty of side-quests in Knights of the Old Republic scattered amongst each major location. The player helps the locals with a variety of issues, from the downtrodden in Taris’ Undercity needing a hero, to the Wookies of the Jedi ruins on Dantooine hiding their own secrets unknown to even the Jedi Masters. Each member of the protagonist’s team similarly has their own side-quest once the player begins to earn their trust. These side-quests cumulatively add approximately 7-10 hours of gameplay.

As mentioned, the player must choose between following the Light or Dark Side of the Force, with each morality path containing its own twists and outcomes with regard to the main quest and most of the side-quests. For players looking to experience everything available in Knights of the Old Republic, this means they will have to play the main quest and all side-quests following both morality paths. Playing the entire game, side missions included, takes an average of 45 hours to complete, so a full playthrough of both morality paths should take just around 90 hours.
