Spider-Man: No Way Home Script Reveals Thor: Ragnarok Easter Egg

Spider-Man: No Way Home features a subtle callback to Thor: Ragnarok.

In the wall crawler’s third solo outing within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) turns to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) for help after his secret identity was revealed to the world. Strange attempts to make the world forget who Spider-Man is by using the Runes of Kauf-Kaul, but Peter’s interruptions cause the spell to go haywire and shake the entire Sanctum Sanctorum. One of the relics that begins to fall apart is the same one that the God of Thunder had trouble with in Ragnarok.

The script for Spider-Man: No Way Home reveals a callback to Thor: Ragnarok.

No Way Home‘s script reveals that the quake ruining the relic again was a written callback to the film directed by Taika Waititi and starring Chris Hemsworth. In Ragnarok, when Doctor Strange questions Thor about why he has brought a threat like Loki back on Earth, Thor begins to fiddle with the relic and caused its many pieces to spill onto the table, and then fails to put it back together properly. The moment marks an awkward exchange between Strange and Thor, who was surprised to find out that “Earth has wizards now.”

Thor stands beside the relic seen in Thor: Ragnarok and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

While the script shows that the Easter egg was planned back in drafts of the high-earning blockbuster, it is not the only MCU callback to be featured in the film. Some notable examples include Tony Stark’s Dum-E robot from the Iron Man trilogy and other Marvel movies being revealed to have ended up in Happy Hogan’s possession, as well as Peter’s Spider-Man: Homecoming love interest, Liz Toomes, speaking to a magazine about the web head being a liar following his identity reveal.

As for any direct relation between Spider-Man and Thor, the two have only both appeared in two MCU movies — Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame — though they are rarely onscreen together. However, Peter has mimicked the Asgardian’s voice and mannerisms during a brief moment of Homecoming. While Thor will be starring in the upcoming film Thor: Love and Thunder, no future projects for Spider-Man have been officially announced, though producer Amy Pascal has revealed that there are plans in development for Tom Holland’s run as the hero.

Meanwhile, Strange and the Sanctum Sanctorum will return in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The film will also feature the return of characters like Baron Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams), while introducing newcomer America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) and other rumored characters to the MCU. Whether the aforementioned Sanctum relic will be brought back to fall apart for a third time remains to be seen.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is currently playing exclusively in theaters.
