Peacemaker Mean Tweets Prove John Cena Can’t Escape ‘You Can’t See Me’ Jokes

John Cena, the star of HBO Max’s DC Extended Universe-set original series Peacemaker, recently gave his own spin on the trend of celebrities reading mean tweets about themselves.

On Twitter, Peacemaker series creator James Gunn shared the official video of Cena — who appears to be semi-in-character as Christopher Smith/Peacemaker — responding to mean tweets. Fans of WWE are sure to get a kick out of the video, with perennial babyface Cena getting the opportunity to show off his heel promo chops for the first time in a good long while. “I’m going to dig into your sour tweets and see if I can’t bring some peace into your mundane little lives,” he says.

Many of the tweets featured in the video come from users who were questioning the decision to give Peacemaker his own solo series following his live-action debut appearance in Gunn’s DCEU feature film The Suicide Squad, which doesn’t exactly paint the character in the best light. “Could be good but I’m just confused as to who’s asking for this,” one user wrote. Cena replied, “‘It could be good.’ Here’s a spoiler: it’s fucking great.”

Another user was more optimistic, writing, “I have a feeling the Peacemaker is going to be an interesting character.” However, they also added, “Too bad we can’t see him though.” This is a reference to Cena’s WWE catchphrase, “You can’t see me,” which has spawned countless memes over the years. “I have the feeling that this joke will someday go away,” Cena says in the video, sighing deeply. “The fuck sandwich that is my life…”

As previously mentioned, Peacemaker spins out of the events of The Suicide Squad, which premiered in theaters and on HBO Max back in August of 2021. The show’s first season is currently five episodes into its eight-episode run, and is slated to conclude on Thursday, Feb. 17. Executive producer/writer/co-director Gunn recently spoke on the possibility of a second season, saying, there’s a “really good chance” of Peacemaker being renewed. Thus far, the series has been a hit with critics, currently holding a 94 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The first five episodes of Peacemaker are streaming now on HBO Max. New episodes drop Thursdays.
