Well into its second year, gacha sensation Genshin Impact is showing no signs of slowing down, and fans of the game can look forward to more content and events as the story progresses and the hunt for the Traveler’s twin closes in.
The Genshin Impact manhua is yet another way studio Mihoyo is setting about expanding the world of the game, with brand new adventurers with characters new and old to either delight the player, or hook a few new Travellers into the mysterious land of Teyvat.
What is the Genshin Impact Video Game About?
Genshin Impact is an open-world RPG where the player explores the world of Teyvat in search of their missing twin. Each region of Teyvat is ruled over by an Archon who has an affiliation with one of seven elements — Pyro, Hydro, Cryo, Geo, Anemo, Electro and Dendro. These elements can be bestowed to certain people as Visions, allowing them to control the element in question.
Building a successful team of Vision-bearers is crucial for the Traveler to seek out their lost sibling and uncover the corruption in Teyvat along the way, whether it be the murder of the Geo Archon Rex Lapis or the Vision Hunt Decree in the land of Inazuma. Behind it all lurk the Fatui, an organization working for the Cryo Archon with their hands in every nation they can muster.
What is the Plot of Genshin Impact’s Manhua?
The manhua contains three stories so far. The first is a flashback to a bygone era only mentioned in the game when the Anemo Archon Barbatos helped to free the people of the nation of Mondstadt from a cruel aristocracy. The second is a flash-forward to three years prior to the game where the comic illustrates the backstories of characters Diluc Ragnvindr and Kaeya Alberich, adopted brothers whose father’s death and a deadly secret would have Diluc nearly killed Kaeya before ultimately leaving Mondstadt instead. Finally, the bulk of the story is spent in Mondstadt, a few months before the arrival of the Traveler.
This main plot picks up when Grandmaster Varka of the Knights of Favonius takes leave with most senior knights on a crusade from Mondstadt, leaving Jean Gunnhildr as Acting Grandmaster, with Kaeya as her backing Cavalry Captain and Lisa Minci a stout support as Librarian. Soon after the Grandmaster’s departure, Diluc returns to Mondstadt to take the place of his dead father running Dawn Winery. He immediately begins using his wealth and influence to purge Mondstadt of corruption and then uses less conventional methods when needed, including dangerous fake Visions known as Delusions — the cause of his father’s death.
During the celebration of Ludi Harpastum, there is an attack in the city on some diplomats, which is where Outrider Amber comes into her own, befriending the young Collei who is most likely responsible for the attack. Collei has been subjected to numerous horrific scientific experiments by the Fatui, and whether the Knights will be able to save Collei becomes the hidden drama of this favorite festival — one of the first crises they need to prove themselves with now that they’re all Mondstadt has to protect it.
The manhua is focused on a time frame completely outside that of the game, and helps to establish backstories that don’t always make sense without the extra context, particularly Diluc and Kaeya’s, who contradict each other when asked directly. While not necessary to play or enjoy the game, fans of the Genshin Impact lore or Mondstadt characters will not want to miss out.
Which Game Characters Are in the Comic?
Jean, Kaeya, Lisa, Amber and Diluc all have major parts in the comic, with Venti making brief appearances. Cyno, an as-yet-unreleased character, also shows up as part of the main plot. Whether Collei will show up in-game is yet to be seen.
