WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Euphoria Season 2, Episode 3, “Ruminations: Big and Little Bullys,” now streaming on HBO Max.
Euphoria is no Game of Thrones, but some of its characters have lived a little too close to the edge. Season 1 introduced all the characters and the high stakes that come with their dramatic stories, but Season 2 deals with the consequences of those high stakes, potentially including death.
With many characters going down dangerous and self-destructive paths, one of them may be meeting their end by the end of the season. But will it be a teenage addict, a deplorable and selfish father, a misunderstood sister or a new best friend? It may seem easy to theorize who will die in Season 2, but Euphoria has proven time and time again that it likes to switch things up.
Rue’s Actions Have Deadly Consequences in Euphoria
Rue’s downward spiral into the world of drugs has dug herself into a much deeper hole in the third episode of Season 2, one that she may never be able to climb out of. In a desperate attempt to re-stock her drug supply, Rue visits drug dealer Laurie and proposes a scheme that includes a new network of teenage drug dealers that will gain Laurie more money. Laurie fronts her a suitcase of $10,000 worth of drugs, which Rue recklessly takes a sample of, foreshadowing her doomed fate. Laurie made no jokes in telling Rue that if something went wrong with the drugs, Rue would be the one being sold.
Rue clearly has no plan for her life, let alone the next month of drugs she’ll blow through. With Rue manipulating and sabotaging her closest relationships with Gia, Ali and Jules, she will soon have no guidance to help her through her crippling addiction. It’s also worth noting that Euphoria has always been narrated in the past tense with present Rue, making audiences question what her fate is.
Cal Would Rather Die Than Have His Secrets Exposed
Cal may seem like a tough guy on the outside, but inside he’s threatened with insecurities and secrets that he’s desperate to cover up. In Season 2, Episode 3, he visits Fez and Ashtray for a second time, but Ash has the jump on him first. Cal mistakenly believes that Fez has the sex tape of him and Jules, and begins to spill their one-night stand on his own accord.
Cal is living on thin ice right now; his own son seems to be disgusted by him, the missing DVD can send him straight to jail, and it all seems to be bringing up his inability to understand his sexuality. There’s even a hypothetical scene of what would happen if anything got exposed — he would commit suicide, without question. Cal has also been snooping around too much of Fez’s business, which Ash is willing to protect at all costs, even if it means murdering someone.
Lexi May Be In the Wrong Place at the Wrong Time
Season 2 has been Lexi’s time to shine, but what if it’s because it’s her last season? Lexi is Euphoria‘s sweetheart; she stays out of the drama, minds her business and commits to her role as the “observer.” But now she’s stepping up, putting on her own play and sparking a friendship — or potential romance — with Fez. With all this going on, it’s easy to forget that her role in the show was once as Rue’s childhood best friend, but her friendship was abused by Rue when they got older and Rue’s addiction became worse.
For the sake of the story, it would make sense why Lexi would be the one to bite the dust. Lexi’s death could light a fire under Rue to stop using, and make for an emotional moment for Fez, who hasn’t really connected to anyone outside of Ash and Rue. That’s all assuming that Lexi’s death comes from getting too deep into Fez and Rue’s world that she’s exposing herself to. But the only problem with writing her death into the show is that she’s a fan favorite because of her innocence and relatability. If Lexi dies, they will riot.
Elliot’s Death Can Serve a Purpose
Just like Lexi, Elliot begins his story in Euphoria by supporting Rue’s character. It makes him pretty one-dimensional, but according to Jules, there’s something that he’s hiding. Elliot doesn’t seem to have any ill intent towards Rue, but he definitely doesn’t have her best interests in mind. They first meet at a New Year’s party where they use drugs together. But even when Rue almost goes into cardiac arrest, he never seems too concerned with her addiction going forward in their friendship. In fact, Elliot seems to be instigating her drug use even further.
Rue and Elliot’s flirtatious friendship is definitely a soft spot in Rue’s heart, which is why his death would be so heartbreaking to her that she may just quit. Several fan theories suggest that Elliot will overdose, and remind Rue of the lives she’s destroying — both her and her family’s — just by using. There’s also indication that they have a very similar relationship to Rue and her father, who passed away when she was younger. Elliot may be a new character to the series, but he may be outlived by his classmates if he continues to ignore his own addiction.
