Spider-Man: No Way Home was an emotional ride for Tom Holland, who said the experience felt like saying goodbye to the character he has been playing for five years.
Speaking with Deadline, Holland said putting on the Spider-Man suit felt like an ending. “There definitely was a sense for me, as an actor, that this was the last time that I could potentially don the suit,” Holland said, “so a lot of that emotion came from the act of saying goodbye, which is one of the biggest themes throughout this film.”
While it’s still not officially confirmed whether or not Holland will play Spider-Man again in a future solo film, the story of No Way Home is the end of a significant chapter in Peter Parker’s story. Playing the character felt like a goodbye for Holland, but the actor said it also made him more aware of his luck. “This film also felt like a celebration of three generations of cinema,” he said. “So, at times, we would be getting into these scenes that were incredibly emotional. They’re very taxing, and I was so happy to be there, that I had to go at it a different way and kind of go, ‘wow, look at my life. Look what’s happened to me.'”
Holland’s career skyrocketed after his entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, resulting in roles alongside Daisy Ridley (Chaos Walking) and Will Smith (Spies in Disguise). He will next share the big screen with Mark Wahlberg in the upcoming Uncharted film based on the video game franchise of the same name.
The actor’s quest to bring intense feeling to his third solo Spider-Man film in No Way Home speaks to his willingness and excitement to continuously grow as a performer. “It was tough, but you know, anything hard is worthwhile,” Holland said. “I was happy to kind of really push myself and to make this film more emotional than superhero films have been in the past.”
Spider-Man: No Way Home is directed by Jon Watts and stars Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield along with Zendaya and Jacob Batalon. William Dafoe, Alfred Molina and Jamie Foxx reprise their roles as Green Goblin, Doc Ock and Electro, respectively, along with Rhys Ifans as the Lizard and Thomas Haden Church as Sandman. The film is in theaters now.
