Pokémon Sword and Shield‘s Marnie and Piers have been confirmed to appear in an upcoming episode of Pokémon Master Journeys.
As reported by Oricon, the two popular trainers will make their first animated appearance in an episode which will be broadcast in Japan on Feb. 25. Piers will be voiced in the anime by Hiro Shimono, who Demon Slayer fans may recognize as the voice of the cowardly swordsman, Zenitsu Agatsuma. Marnie will be portrayed by Yui Ogura, who previously starred in Black Clover and Platinum End. A picture of Ogura cosplaying as her new character, complete with a plush of Marnie’s trademark Pokémon partner, the type-shifting Morpeko, was released to accompany the two characters’ anime debut.
The brother and sister duo were first introduced in Sword and Shield, which was released for the Nintendo Switch in 2019. Piers appears as the the leader of Spikemuth’s neglected Pokémon gym, while Marnie challenges the player throughout their adventure as one of the game’s rival characters. Both trainers specialize in the use of Dark-type Pokémon.
Pokémon Master Journeys: The Series is the 24th season of the main Pokémon anime. The season premiered in 2021, during the Pokémon franchise’s year-long celebration of the 25th anniversary of the original games’ debut. The show’s current arc sees Ash and Goh revisiting past regions and old friends from previous seasons of the show. The series is distributed in the United States as a Netflix exclusive. The streaming company releases new episodes in batches, with the next group scheduled to go up sometime in March.
In addition to its Sword and Shield tie-in, Ash, Goh and Dawn will also appear in a multi-episode arc themed after the newest game in the series, Pokémon Legends: Arceus. The trio of trainers will wear new outfits that match the game’s time period. The first two episodes in the arc were broadcast in Japan on Jan. 21, while the third and fourth parts will air on Jan. 28, the game’s release date.
Pokémon Legends: Arceus features a brand new open-world, overhauled battle mechanics and a new look at the history of the Pokémon world. The game takes place in the distant past of Diamond and Pearl‘s Sinnoh region, back when the area was known as “Hisui,” and tells the story of the trainers who put together the original Pokédex. Early reviews for the title have already praised it for its evolution of the long-running series’ mechanics and gameplay, though it has also received criticism for its visuals and technical performance.
