WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for Superman & Lois Season 2, Episode 2, “The Ties That Bind,” now available on the CW.
In Season 2 of Superman & Lois, Clark (Tyler Hoechlin) has found his back to the wall big time. His powers are shorting out due to scary visions, and the Man of Steel doesn’t even know yet that they’re connected to the Kryptonian killer, Doomsday. However, things may go from bad to worse pretty soon, as Kal-El’s newest villain seems to be making his own evil version of the Justice League.
This is none other than Lt. Mitchell Anderson, who took over control of the DoD from Sam Lane. The general stepped away to spend more time with Lois and the family, but Mitchell has proved he is no mensch, nor an ally. He’s bullying Superman for not jumping on board his xenophobic America-first crusade, hinting that if Kal doesn’t join them, he’ll be seen as an enemy. So much so, he’s co-opted the House of El symbol for his own soldiers.
But as the latest episode proved, it’s more than just cosmetic, because Anderson’s army isn’t made up of normal people, but superhumans primed for war. When a mysterious villain was found inhaling a toxin that made him a Hulk, Superman tried to stop him at an airport hangar. However, his powers went of the fritz again, allowing the behemoth to smash Kal up.
Luckily, Anderson’s soldiers sped in and battered the villain like he was nothing. A man and a woman lifted him up and slammed him down, coming off like Anderson’s own Superman and Wonder Woman. To top it off, Anderson had his own flash in Tag, a teen who was taken from Smallville in Season 1 when X-Kryptonite gave him super-speed but almost killed him.
Given Anderson led the Supermen of America as Outburst in the comics, many assumed this might be the unit brought into the show. But it could be that Mitchell is more interested in a Justice League, as they’d be more intimidating on a global scale, with the military leader coming off like a sinister Bruce Wayne.
Seeing as the Arrowverse already had its version of the League for “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” this would be a nice twist, especially if the toxin was made by Anderson’s team. It’d show how cerebral he can be, corrupting more than just Superman’s symbol and orchestrating a shady plot to make people crave his vision of security. More so, the puppet master of the League might not even be Anderson, but Lex Luthor as recent developments in the farm town teased.
It would make a lot of sense if Lex was creating a warped League, made even worse by the metahuman school of teens Anderson has access to. This would leave Clark truly scared as Anderson’s hidden League, coupled with the incoming Doomsday, would surely prove to be an insurmountable hurdle.
To see Lt. Anderson’s League unfolding, new episodes of Superman & Lois air Tuesdays at 8 pm ET/PT on The CW.
