The Batman Promo Reveals Bruce Wayne is Riddler’s Target | CBR

A new promotional spot for The Batman reveals Paul Dano’s Riddler is going after the Dark Knight’s alter ego, Bruce Wayne.

Shared on the official Warner Bros. Indonesia YouTube channel, the “Game” promo begins with Robert Pattinson’s Batman saying, “Like it or not, it’s Riddler’s game now.” The clip then cuts to a shot of a wall covered in pictures with the words “The Truth About Gotham” written at the top, followed by a series of action sequences.

Additional scenes include the voice of the Riddler (Dano) saying he’s “always loved little puzzles” and Jim Gordon realizing that the Prince of Puzzles has decided to make Bruce his next victim. The clip ends with a voice-over from the Riddler saying, “It can be cruel, poetic or blind. But when it’s denied, it’s in violence you may find…” before Batman responds, “The answer’s ‘Justice.'”

The new promo dropped just days after The Batman’s director Matt Reeves shared that the real-life Zodiac Killer was the inspiration for Dano’s Riddler. “The premise of the movie is that the Riddler is kind of molded in an almost Zodiac Killer sort of mode, and is killing very prominent figures in Gotham, and they are the pillars of society,” Reeves said at the time. “These are supposedly legitimate figures. It begins with the mayor, and then it escalates from there. And in the wake of the murders, he reveals the ways in which these people were not everything they said they were, and you start to realize there’s some kind of association. And so just like Woodward and Bernstein, you’ve got Gordon and Batman trying to follow the clues to try and make sense of this thing in a classic kind-of-detective story way.”

Reeves also discussed how the film would be more focused on the investigative side of the Caped Crusader back in 2017, saying, “There’s a chance to do an almost noir-driven, detective version of Batman that is point-of-view driven in a very, very powerful way, that hopefully is going to connect you to what’s going on inside of his head and inside of his heart.” Pattinson shared similar sentiments when he recently described the upcoming project as “a detective movie.”

In addition to facing the Riddler, an early synopsis for The Batman teased that the movie may include another villain, as well as encounters with Catwoman, the Penguin and Carmine Falcone.

Directed and co-written by Matt Reeves, The Batman arrives in theaters on March 4.
