WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for Superman & Lois Season 2, Episode 2, “The Ties That Bind,” which aired Tuesday January 18th on the CW.
Season 2 of Superman & Lois delivered quite a shock in the first two episodes of Season 2 as Jordan (Alex Garfin) and Sarah (Inde Navarrette) saw their relationship come to a quick halt after she returned from camp. It was very heartbreaking, as Jordan is still clearly in love. However, as Sarah charts her new path of self-discovery and identity out, the show may be unravelling a most surprising love triangle.
Sarah admitted she’s been acting weird because she kissed someone at camp, and as she came clean, she admitted it was a girl. They’re not together, but Sarah’s definitely confused and looks like she wants to explore what being bisexual means. This is unsurprising as the Kents’ return to Smallville has waded deep into angst and the boys’ coming-of-age story.
Jordan was clearly hurt, as he shut Sarah out and left her on the Kent porch, but what might be an even bigger stinger to come is the third party Sarah may end up falling for: Jordan’s own ‘sister.’ Natalie came over from an alternate reality and is now living on the farm with her father, acclimating to the planet and a reality where Lois isn’t her mom and Superman is a hero.
What has stood out the most about her so far is the chemistry she had with Sarah at school and also, when she helped fix Sarah’s car. They had a playful dynamic, listened to each other and Sarah eventually took Nat’s advice to let Jordan know the truth about her waning interest.
They’re clearly comfortable with each other and what truly sparked this camaraderie is that they both feel like outsiders. Apart from being different, grief might end up being a common point too, as Sarah had her own depression and therapy, not to mention self-harm issues, while Nat has been broken over losing her world and now having to adjust to this chaotic Earth.
Thus, their bond is already filled with more nuance than just Jordan wooing Sarah because she’s a pretty face. Admittedly, Sarah and Jordan also connected over not being like other couples, but it did feel like her vibe was stronger with Nat. It’ll be intriguing moving forward if the show does take this route, especially as Jordan end up resenting Nat for stealing his girl, given how immature he can be at times.
It would add further drama to the Kent household and leave Jordan’s brother, Jon, in between a rock and a hard place. Not to mention it’ll put both Natalie’s dad and Lois and Clark in a situation they might be unable to fix. Ultimately, it would be a powerful lesson for Jordan growing up, as he’d learn that just like how he has his journey to find his true self as a Kryptonian hybrid, these two teenage girls also have their own journey to find their place in the world, which may be with each other.
To see if Sarah and Nat spark a romance, new episodes of Superman & Lois air Tuesdays at 8 pm ET/PT on The CW.
