Tim Roth is returning as the Abomination in Marvel’s She-Hulk, and the actor recently touched on how it all came to be.
Roth first played the villainous Emil Blonsky in the second-ever movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. In an interview with Uproxx, he said he was shocked to be invited back into the MCU over a decade later. “I went in to chat with Kevin Feige and he said, ‘I’ve got an idea. Come in.’ Really? Really? Because the original thing that I did, when I did that first Incredible Hulk movie, was I just did it for my kids.”
The actor said one of the highlights about returning to the MCU was getting to work with the stars of She-Hulk. “I got to work with Mark Ruffalo — awesome, who I love . . . But this extraordinary woman, Tatiana [Maslany] — incredible, that woman. So that was a blast. It was insane.” In The Incredible Hulk, Roth acted opposite Edward Norton as Bruce Banner. Ruffalo took over the role in 2012’s The Avengers and has played the character in multiple MCU projects since.
According to rumors that surfaced on Reddit, Abomination will be primarily a comedic presence on She-Hulk. One storyline will involve Emil Blonsky being up for parole while serving time in the Raft. Attorney Jennifer Walters (Maslany) acts as his caseworker, and Wong (Benedict Wong) will make an appearance as well, carrying over his and Abomination’s odd friendship from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Blonsky’s plan after getting out of prison is to open “a retreat in the mountains for various low tier villains and other side characters,” including Man-Bull, Baron Blood and Porcupine.
Abomination and his friends won’t be the only villains to play a role in She-Hulk. Jameela Jamil will appear as Titania, a super-strong rival to the Jade Giantess who is rumored to be “an influencer of sorts.” Jamil was eager to hype up the series, writing, “Man this show is SO fun. I cannot believe I get to do this bloody job.” Additionally, Jim Carrey is purported to have filmed something for She-Hulk, leading to speculation that he will play the mad scientist M.O.D.O.K. and debut the character either in the show or the upcoming Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania.
She-Hulk does not yet have an official release date, but the 10-episode first season is expected to premiere in 2022 on Disney+.
