Marvel Studios’ Moon Knight will take the hero on a globetrotting adventure.
An official plot synopsis for Moon Knight provided by Disney+ reveals the series’ scale and teases the hero’s personality crisis, portrayed by Oscar Isaac. The summary spotlights Steven Grant, a “mild-mannered gift-shop employee” who suffers from blackouts and memories of a supposed second life. Over time, Steven discovers that he has dissociative identity disorder, and these blackouts are tied to his alter ego, mercenary Marc Spector. As Steven struggles to come to terms with his multiple personas, he stumbles upon a “deadly mystery” that ties him to Egypt and draws the attention of newfound enemies.
Created by Doug Moench and Don Perlin, Moon Knight’s mental condition has been a vital part of the hero’s journey since his earliest comic book appearances. After an attack by a colleague left Marc Spector critically wounded outside of an Egyptian pharaoh’s tomb, the ancient god, Khonshu, resurrected his body. When Marc traveled back to America, he became Khonshu’s champion, Moon Knight. To cover his tracks and obtain information from different social circles of crime, Marc developed the persona of Steve Grant, an eccentric millionaire, and Jake Lockley, a street-wise can driver. Over time, Marc’s past trauma and multiple personalities led him to develop dissociative identity disorder, though some comics have suggested that the condition arose from Khonshu’s intervention.
Isaac, who received critical acclaim for his roles in Ex Machina and Show Me a Hero, has said that portraying Moon Knight and his many personas was one of the most significant challenges of his career. “I could not wait to get to set, and it was the biggest workload I’ve ever had in my career and most challenging; by the sheer amount of stuff we had to do in eight months, and even yet, I couldn’t wait to get to set and work,” he said.
While Moon Knight sorts through his identity issues, he will contend with Ethan Hawke as Arthur Harrow. In the comics, Dr. Harrow was a brilliant scientist who experimented on people to explore the brain’s pain receptors. When he eventually faced off against Moon Knight, Harrow outsmarted the vigilante and escaped capture, making him one of the hero’s few unsolved cases. Hawke’s portrayal of Harrow reimagines the character as a messianic cult-like figure who crosses paths with Steven in his civilian life. Harrow’s interaction with Steven from the first official Moon Knight trailer suggests that he senses the hero’s inner turmoil, as he coldly says, “There’s chaos in you.”
