20th Century Studios’ The King’s Man is coming to Hulu next month.
The studio announced that the Kingsman: The Secret Service and Kingsman: The Golden Circle prequel will arrive on the platform in the United States on Feb. 18, while those in Latin America can catch it on Star+ and those in other select international markets can stream it on Disney+ under the Star banner.
The King’s Man and its two predecessors are based on the Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons comic The Secret Service. The new film explores the origin of the infamous spy agency, whose roots date back to World War I.
“It’s more serious, but it’s not boring,” director Matthew Vaughn told ET in 2019. “With all due respect to the Oscar-winning movies of the last 10 years, not many of them are big, epic films that you want to watch again. You think, ‘Great film. I’m done with that one.’ When I was a kid, whether it was Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago, French Connection, this movie called The Man Who Would Be King, they were big epics that were proper films but they weren’t boring. They were adventures but they had heart and romance. It’s time to bring back that genre to a modern audience. Weirdly, the more old fashion we’ve gone, the more fresh it feels.”
While discussing what drew him to The King’s Man, star Ralph Fiennes explained in December 2021 that “Initially, it was the drama of [the character]. I play the Duke of Oxford. He’s a pacifist… We learn later on he’s been in wars himself. He’s been awarded medals for bravery, but actually, he’s profoundly anti-war. The tension is set up with his son, played brilliantly by Harris. [Orlando] can’t bear the idea that he should go to war and lose his life in any conflict. He believes there are other ways of combating the evil in the world than just going to war. That drama that Matthew [Vaughn] proposed, that father-son drama, is the center of it.
“Alongside that came wonderful accessories — like a great sword fight at the end of the movie. I’ve always loved stage sword fighting. I love films where sword fighting has been the center like Ridley Scott’s The Duelists. I’ve loved watching those old Basil Rathbone, Errol Flynn, Robin Hood, and their brilliance… Those actors of the ’30s and ’40s really knew what to do with the sword. So that was a lovely gift at the end of the film.”
The King’s Man arrives on Hulu Feb. 18.
