WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Scream, now playing in theaters.
In the Scream franchise, it’s safe to say being the smartest of the targets doesn’t mean you can mark yourself safe. Randy Meeks found that out the hard way in the second movie because, despite all his rules and knowledge about the horror genre, he was gutted in Gale’s news van. And a similar thing happened in the newest entry, as Randy’s nephew, Chad, turned out to be the most clever of the victims, only to quickly descend into being the most idiotic.
Chad and his twin sister, Mindy, carried on Randy’s legacy, rattling out scary movie rules and fully dissecting the motives behind the new Ghostface. And it all came to a head in the finale when Chad and his girlfriend, Liv, were at a party to honor their fallen comrade, Wes. They were hooking up on the couch in full view of the party, but when Liv wanted to take their hot and heavy session upstairs, Chad turned the chance down.
It broke the stigma of guys’ judgment being clouded by sex in these kinds of movies and showed how intuitive Chad was. He told her he preferred to stay in public because with a crowd around, he would be safer. He also admitted he couldn’t trust her fully because their crew was being targeted. But this angered Liv, and she stormed off, with Chad feeling regretful over his caustic actions. Regardless, it was an understandable decision and something Randy would have been proud of.
Unfortunately, Chad’s conscience kicked in and he went looking for Liv. And, as is par the course in these movies, as soon as he went outside, he was quickly gutted by Ghostface as he used his phone to track Liv down. However, as much as the movie tried to make him a sympathetic character, it was a bad choice to go out because not only did he break his rule and go alone, but he also went into a dark, bushy spot where no one could see or hear him.
In truth, he signed his own death warrant, but in a strange twist of fate, the end of Scream turned him into the new Dewey. That’s because when the ambulances cleared the home out after the real killers were put down, Chad and Mindy were found alive, giving each other a thumbs up. But despite his survival, one has to think Chad could have helped reduce the body count had he acted on his instincts and knowledge throughout the entire film.
To see how Chad broke his own rules, Scream is in theaters now.
