The Walking Dead: 10 Characters We Wish Stuck Around For The Whisperer War

During Season 9 of AMC’s hit zombie series The Walking Dead, the show’s heroes encountered their most terrifying enemies yet. The human survivors disguised as the living dead quickly provided the hit horror with scares, thrills, and shocks, and they had every fan worried for the fate of their favorite walker-killing warriors.

Thanks to Alpha and her frightful followers, The Whisperer War was brutal and left many casualties on both sides. Though many of The Walking Dead’s most popular players survived the battles, it’s fun to imagine how things might have turned out had these post-apocalyptic alumni been around to help silence The Whisperers.

10 Morgan Fighting His Way Through Alpha’s Horde Would’ve Made For Great TV

Fear The Walking Dead’s head honcho is busy stick-fighting his way through a nuclear fallout in AMC’s spin-off, but had Morgan never left Rick and friends, his martial arts mastery and weary wisdom would certainly have come in handy against The Whisperers.

Lennie James’ post-apocalyptic persona is incredibly resilient to the point that he believes he simply cannot die. His perseverance is matched by his bravery, and you can guarantee that Morgan would not have taken Henry’s death lightly had he been around to avenge it.

9 Sgt. Abraham Ford Would Have Been The Perfect Commander For The Battle At Hilltop

Sgt. Abraham Ford’s tragic death at the hands of Negan may just be the greatest loss that Rick ever suffered in terms of his combat force. Ford was exactly the kind of guy you want by your side in a zombie apocalypse, and Michael Cudlitz’s mean-mouthed warrior was arguably The Walking Dead’s greatest fighter, and this would make him a huge asset in the fight against The Whisperers.

Not even the mighty Beta could intimidate this hardened soldier. Abraham’s experience and courage would also have played a part in the battle of Hilltop.

8 Lori Grimes Versus Alpha Is An Exciting Concept

Even though Lori managed to rub many of The Walking Dead‘s fans the wrong way during her few seasons on the show, given Sarah Wayne Callies’ undeniable talent as an actress, it’s easy to imagine her turning things around and becoming a formidable, fan-favorite survivor in the zombie series.

Lori versus Alpha is a box office battle if there ever was one on The Walking Dead. An exciting prospect for sure, but perhaps an even more exciting one if this war took place just as it did without Rick Grimes.

7 Simon Could Have Easily Added A Little More Of His Backstabbing To The Walking Dead

Negan’s number 2 was never likely to survive The Saviors War given his penchant for exploring his options behind his boss’s back. But Steven Ogg’s intensity would have certainly thrown a wild card into the back and forth between The Walking Dead’s heroes and The Whisperers.

It may be hard to imagine Simon as a man capable of changing sides and standing alongside the likes of Daryl or Michonne, but as is now common knowledge in regard to the Savior, he wasn’t exactly a loyal subject to begin with.

6 Glenn Rhee Has Been Sorely Missed By Fans Since His Untimely End

The Korean pizza delivery boy’s death remains the most gruesome and upsetting in the history of The Walking Dead. The impact on both the show and its survivors can’t be overstated, but had Negan stopped at bashing Abraham’s brains in, Glenn would likely have stayed a central figure in the series until the end.

Steven Yeun’s exit forced Lauren Cohan’s character to grow into a fierce fighter. Fans would certainly have enjoyed the chance to see the young couple transform together. Glenn always seemed a man incapable of shedding his morals though, so perhaps it’s a good thing that he never had to witness the horrors that came with Alpha and her horde.

5 Dwight Would Have Had A Chance To Redeem Himself On The Walking Dead

DWIGHT THE WALKING DEAD

Another defector to Fear The Walking Dead, Austin Amelio’s character has excelled during his time on the spin-off show so far. His reunion with his wife and his redemption in becoming a good guy in The Walking Dead universe has made Dwight a far more popular persona than many first imagined possible.

Had Daryl Dixon been a little more forgiving then maybe Dwight could have stuck around and redeemed himself in the original series. Preventing the brutally tragic fate that awaited Tara would have cemented Dwight as a hero.

4 No Matter How Terrifying, No Whisperer Is A Match For Merle Dixon

The Walking Dead Merle

Michael Rooker’s roguish redneck is perhaps the most fearless figure to ever roam The Walking Dead. You can guarantee that even when faced with the ghoulish goons of Alpha’s horde, Merle Dixon would have been bouncing his bayonet-arm off of the heads of any skin-wearers he could get close to.

This is a man that cut off his own hand and survived. It took The Walking Dead’s greatest villain to take out Merle the first time around. Beta didn’t fare well against Daryl, but he wouldn’t have stood a chance against big brother Dixon.

3 Carl Deserved The Chance To Lead His People Against The Whisperers

Chandler Rigg’s young warrior always seemed destined to outlive his father’s story. Though Carl’s early teenage years weren’t exceptionally well received by The Walking Dead fanbase, by the time a walker had taken a chunk out of him, most were sad to see him go.

Getting to watch Carl follow in his dad’s footsteps and become a true leader is something The Walking Dead fans will never get to see. It’s perhaps even more disappointing that they never got to witness the young Grimes man going to war against Alpha’s skin-wearing weirdos.

2 Sasha May Have Made Short Work Of Alpha

The Walking Dead had no shortage of fierce females to take on Alpha once she crept onto the scene. However, when it comes to the women warriors of AMC’s undead adventure, few of them have ever been capable of going toe to toe with Sasha.

A layered performance from Sonequa Martin-Green always ensured that this survivor was one that fans wanted to see more of. Alpha may have met her match in the end anyway, but she likely wouldn’t have rained as much terror down on The Walking Dead’s survivors had Sasha still been around to stop her.

1 As Always, Rick Grimes Would Have Been Fighting On The Front Lines

Rick Grimes tells Lori he's doing "stuff" and "things" to avoid talking The Walking Dead

Andrew Lincoln’s exit undoubtedly coincided with a huge improvement in the quality of The Walking Dead. Whether this is down to Rick’s leaving or other circumstances remains up for debate. Officer Friendly’s step away certainly did freshen up the show and allowed others to steal some of the spotlight.

Imagining The Whisperer War with Rick Grimes’ involvement is easy thanks to Robert Kirkman’s original comic, but seeing Andrew Lincoln himself raise his colt python in order to silence The Whisperers is an image that fans of AMC’s show will sadly never get to see.
