Fans of J. Jonah Jameson needn’t worry about the character’s tone in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
J.K. Simmons appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast and talked a little about his upcoming return to playing the Daily Bugle editor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After briefly appearing in the Far From Home post-credits scene as an online shock jock, Jameson will be back in full force for next month’s multiversal Spider-Man adventure. And though the universe has changed, the character will still mostly be the same.
“You know what, I think it’s a slightly different version,” Simmons said. “Certainly, from the creators of the current iteration of the story, it’s a very different character. To me, it’s a slightly different character. It’s the same blowhard; the same guy with less hair. Honestly, I kinda wish he had the same hair.”
Simmons went on to stress that despite the change in franchise and the number of years since he last chomped a cigar and called Spidey a menace, Jameson will still be as lovably cantankerous as ever.
“The most important thing is that he’s still the same blowhard and he does have the same damn mustache and cigar, at least,” Simmons continued. “As is appropriate for that character, he’s a little comic relief thing that gets sprinkled lightly into the movie.”
The future of Spider-Man in the MCU is uncertain following No Way Home, especially as Sony is clearly building out its own Spider-Verse on the big and small screen. A Miles Morales film is rumored to be in the works, as are movies for various heroes and villains in Spidey’s pantheon. But Simmons made clear that he has no interest in a Jameson solo outing: “After the first two with Sam [Raimi], friends and people in the business were like, ‘They should do a movie about J. Jonah Jameson’ and I was always like, ‘No, no, no.'”
Along with Simmons’ Jameson, No Way Home will bring back numerous actors and characters from previous Spider-Man movies, including Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus and Jamie Foxx’s Electro — albeit in a new supervillain suit.
Spider-Man: No Way Home arrives Dec. 17 only in theaters.
