GTA: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition Seemingly Hiding Unfinished VR Mode

A piece of code left in Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is giving players an unintended preview into the Virtual Reality mode currently in development for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Ben Turpin, a news content author for Rockstar INTEL, posted a video on Twitter showcasing a debug command that allowed him to see through the eyes of Carl “CJ” Johnson. The minute-long video presented a first-person perspective as CJ walked through the streets of Los Santos, even hijacking a car and challenging a passing officer to a brawl in true Grand Theft Auto fashion.

“There is a debug Unreal command for GTA VR but it looks a little bit unfinished. Maybe it would be cool if they implemented this as a first-person option? It plays pretty well. Gunfights and punching will need tweaking, would be super cool for screenshots!” Ben wrote. He further commented, “Player collision will need some work but it plays well. I hope they add a first-person option with this. It would be very cool.”

There is no official method of accessing this first-person mode through the game, meaning players looking to try the mode themselves will have to enter the debug menu through the use of mods.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas VR for Oculus Quest 2 was announced during Facebook’s Connect 2021 live stream, though no gameplay footage or trailer was shown during the presentation. There is currently no set date for the game’s intended release.

Though this was an interesting preview of the possible future of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition, its present state has left fans of the series dissatisfied. This remastered package includes three beloved classics: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto III.  The bundled trilogy sought to preserve the atmosphere of the originals while simultaneously upgrading the familiar experience, promising updated graphics and modern gameplay enhancements.

However, a long list of technical issues detracted from the remaster’s intended experience, sometimes to comedic effect. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition’s poor launch and buggy gameplay earned it a 0.5 on Metacritic user score, one of the lowest scores in the site’s history. The PC version also faced issues with the Rockstar Launcher, necessitating the game’s temporary delisting, which left owners completely unable to even play the game.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition is available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch. Physical copies will be released on Dec. 7, while iOS and Android versions are set for early 2022.
