Mushoku Tensei has been one of the best and most popular anime series to come out in 2021. It presents a familiar take on isekai anime, with a protagonist that’s been transported to an alternate world, but it does so with far more interest in world building and character development than most.
Its main character, Rudeus Greyrat, is powerful but far from being the strongest character in the series. There’s an array of characters in Mushoku Tensei who boast incredible abilities, some of whom are friends with Rudeus and some who have stood in his way over the series’ two-season run. While Mushoku Tensei doesn’t focus solely on fighting, it’s still had some of the best animated fights this year.
10 Eris’ Kidnapper Was Nearly Able To Kill A Trained Rudeus In His Youth
This character appeared in the first half of the first season, as part of a group that kidnapped Eris because of one of the servants in the house. This particular kidnapper was the most vocal of them all, and the one Rudy struggled to fight with. He was able to get past all of Rudy’s tricks and nearly killed Rudy when he tossed a sword at him—but ultimately Ghislaine easily defeated him, and Rudy has experienced a ton of growth since then.
9 Gallus Cleaner Managed To Attack The Beastkin And Almost Made It Out
Gallus Cleaner was only shown in a handful of episodes as a kidnapper. He appeared in the village with the beastfolk with the intent of kidnapping them all, only for Rudeus to manage to hold him off. However, Rudy wasn’t able to fight him on even ground, and Gallus was even able to fight against the other members of the Dedoldia tribe without any help. It took multiple people working together to defeat him.
8 Rudeus Has Plenty Of Training But His Fear Holds Him Back
Rudeus is the key character of the show, but despite his incredible talents, he’s not the most powerful character. He’s not even close. Most of the time his cowardice keeps him from wanting to actually fight back against people when he’s not in a group.
Rudeus was able to keep up with Paul during his training, and he impressed Roxy with his casting abilities by becoming a Saint class water mage, but his lack of confidence in himself and his inexperience fighting alone are major problems. Still, he’s gaining more experience operating as essentially vigilante adventurers with Rujierd and Eris as part of Dead End.
7 Eris Has Less Training Than Rudeus But Is More Eager To Fight
Eris has a natural talent with a sword, and she’s been largely better than Rudy despite his training under Paul since the moment she was introduced. She’s managed to get a hit on Rujierd, something that Rudeus was never able to do himself even with the help of his Demon Eye power. She’s also trained under Rudeus in casting spells, though she’s not exactly one of the strongest mages ever.
Still, Eris was defeated by Rudy because he has the Demon Eye ability, allowing him to see one second into the future and react to it. This proves that the two of them aren’t that far in ability, and it’s actually Eris’ willingness to fight and fearlessness that makes her a more dangerous fighter.
6 Gyes Dedoldia Was Able To Defeat Eris In Combat Once
Gyes is Ghislaine’s brother, and someone who actually didn’t believe his sister would ever become useful. He became chief of their tribe of beastfolk and is their primary protector. That said, there are clear limitations to his abilities, like when a group of kidnappers set their entire village on fire, confusing their senses.
Still, at his best, Gyes was able to defeat Eris in swordsmanship, proving that he’s a lot more talented than he looks. At the same time, he also has access to Voice Magic, which can render certain people unable to move or fight with a single roar.
5 Paul Is Talented In Multiple Different Sword Styles
Paul is Rudy’s dad, and the person who taught him how to fight with a sword. That’s about all he’s done, considering he’s not exactly one of the best anime dads. But Paul’s rigorous training has helped Rudeus out greatly, even though his affinity is for swordsmanship. That said, when Paul fought Rudy when he was younger he was able to handle Rudy even while he was using magic, and was able to easily knock him out to send him on his way with Ghislaine to the other side of the Greyrat family.
Paul was also a match for Rudy after years of training on the Demon Continent with Rujierd and Eris, but it was a much closer fight. As an advanced user of three different sword styles, Paul is a great jack-of-all-trades type of fighter.
4 Almanfi Managed To Match Ghislaine In Combat
Almanfi is a person who hasn’t been shown very frequently in Mushoku Tensei yet. He makes his first appearance in episode 8 of the anime, intending to attack Rudeus before the Teleportation Incident occurs. His powers allowed him to fight evenly with Ghislaine, and it was actually never shown who would have won before the Teleportation Incident took them all to different places. But his brief scuffle with Ghislaine indicates that he’s easily above most of the fighters shown in the series up to this point.
3 Rujierd Was A Legendary Superd Warrior
Rujierd is a member of the Superd tribe, a legendary group of “dangerous” warriors from the Demon Continent. In particular, Rujierd was actually the man who slayed the person responsible for giving the Superd their bad name in the first place.
With Rujierd’s power, Rudeus and Eris were able to survive on the Demon Continent, as Rujierd was easily able to fight his way through any of the threats to be found on there. If there are some limits to Rujierd’s power, viewers of the first two seasons would have no idea what they are, as he clearly outranks both Rudeus and Eris.
2 Ghislaine Is One Of The Most Talented Sword Users In Her Universe
Ghislaine was once part of Paul’s party when he was an adventurer. Like Paul, she’s an incredibly talented swordsman, except she’s even more talented than Paul. Where Paul became an advanced sword style user, Ghislaine is actually a Sword King, one of the highest ranking swordsmen in the world. At the same time, she’s also an S-Ranked adventurer, and can move at speeds most people can’t even react to. She’s also trained under Rudeus to learn how to use fire magic, having learned some basic fire spells as well.
1 Orsted Might Be One Of The Most Powerful Warriors In His World
We haven’t seen much of Orsted in the anime thus far. Fans reading the light novels and even the manga are aware of what he’s capable of, but for everyone else it’s understandable that they wouldn’t be quite as confident in his abilities. That said, in his first appearance in season one, Orsted was able to look a Dragon directly in the face and be unbothered. Worse, it came and breathed fire on him and he simply shrugged it off. Someone capable of that belongs on pretty much any best fighters list regardless of what else Mushoku Tensei has shown.
