Hawkeye: Why Jeremy Renner Sees Himself as the ‘Grandpa’ of the MCU

Hawkeye star and Marvel Cinematic Universe veteran Jeremy Renner jokingly revealed why he sees himself as the “grandpa” of the franchise.

During a Hawkeye press conference attended by CBR, Renner (who plays Clint Barton/Hawkeye) was asked how quickly his co-star Hailee Steinfeld (Kate Bishop/Hawkeye) acclimated to the Marvel family. “She came in very, very prepared,” Renner began. “She came in hot. She was ready. It’s pretty awesome. It’s pretty sad that it makes me feel old that I see a lotta people come in and see a lotta people go. I’m, like, a grandpa. It’s terrible. But, yeah, no, Hailee came in, ready to rock and prepared and came to play, man.”

Prior to the aforesaid press conference, Renner had previously discussed Kate Bishop’s MCU backstory. “[Kate is] a 22-year-old kid and she’s a big Hawkeye fan,” he stated. “She has a wonderfully annoying and equally charming manner about her, because she’s such a fangirl of Hawkeye. The relationship grows from that, but the biggest problem for Clint is Kate Bishop and the onslaught of problems that she brings into his life.”

However, Renner also recently admitted he is unsure about his post-Hawkeye MCU future. “I don’t have a crystal ball, or I’m not a soothsayer,” the actor commented. “But having Hailee [Steinfeld] come in, and these characters, I think it opens it up for six great episodes for this event type of television. After that, I have no idea. But these six episodes are pretty exciting.”

Series co-director Bert also recently revealed that Renner wanted to explore Clint Barton’s years as Ronin from Avengers: Endgame in Hawkeye. “He wanted the darkness,” she said. “He wanted to go there. And there are moments that the Ronin Clint resurfaces. It’s very important to have those depths that you can explore, so that he can come out of it.”

Bert also talked about the influence the Avenging Marksman’s Christmas problem had on the series. “It’s an absurd Christmas story,” Bert stated. “Just starting from that point, tonally, I was tickled. What does that mean? And it’s throughout the whole series. It’s not what you’re expecting it to be.”
