Eternals’ Worst Enemy Might Be Kang and the TVA | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Eternals, now playing in theaters.

While Eternals heroes believed they were fighting the Deviants for the good of humanity, most of them turned on their master, the Celestial Arishem, after realizing his plan involved Earth’s destruction. But despite the Celestials being god-like beings, they can’t compare to the most powerful known organization in the multiverse: the Time Variance Authority. Not only are they incredibly powerful, but a hint in Loki Season 1 suggests the TVA could be enemies of the Eternals.

In Eternals, their mission on Earth seemed simple. The Arishem commanded them to eradicate the Deviants on Earth, and wait for a message telling them to return home to Olympia. However, the Eternals discovered that they are, in fact, synthetic beings, created to cultivate a planet’s population so that a Celestial can grow inside then emerge, killing the planet and everything on it. Even though they are synthetic and can have their minds wiped clean, they still developed their own personalities and chose to stop the Celestial growing inside of Earth.

The Celestials would be considered gods to many, as they create planets and life to keep the cycle of the universe going. Yet with all this power, the TVA from Loki holds even more. Early on in the show, Loki comes across multiple Infinity Stones chucked into a drawer like they’re worthless, demonstrating the power the TVA holds. They can even casually travel between timelines and destroy them at will.

Despite their claims to be helping the universe, the TVA often doesn’t play nice with people and disregards the lives of anyone who deviates from the Sacred Timeline. During Loki’s arrival at the TVA, he passes through a series of rooms. One of them has a metal detector and a man who says, “Please confirm to your knowledge that you are not a fully robotic being, were born an organic creature, and do in fact possess what many cultures would call a soul.”

Even though Eternals doesn’t clarify if the group is made of organic material or not, it does sound like they wouldn’t pass the robot detector and would be destroyed by the TVA. And if they are affected by it, then it’s even possible that the machine was created with the Eternals in mind. Kang the Conqueror, also known as He Who Remains, created the TVA and has kept watch over the Sacred Timeline for presumably all of time. It’s been made clear that Kang keeps an eye on certain individuals, so he’s likely well aware of beings that are as powerful as the Eternals.

Although it seems the TVA is prepared to detain any Eternal variants, it’s unknown if there’s any dislike towards them beyond being variants. Nothing has indicated so, but it seems strange that an organization as powerful as the TVA would care to check if someone is a robot.

Eternals is currently playing in theaters and Loki Season 1 is available to stream on Disney+.
