Netflix Taps DiCaprio, Lawrence to Save the World in Don’t Look Up Trailer

Netflix released the full trailer for its pre-apocalyptic comedy Don’t Look Up, featuring a star-studded cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Jonah Hill and Meryl Streep.

In the film, which the trailer describes as being “based on real events that haven’t happened yet,” astronomy grad student Kate Dibiasky (Lawrence) and her professor Dr. Randall Mindy (DiCaprio) discover that a giant comet is on a direct collision course with Earth. The duo embarks on a journey to warn mankind about the world-ending meteor, but no one in power takes the threat seriously — including the president of the United States (Streep) and her obnoxious son/Chief of Staff (Hill). At one point in the preview, Hill’s character has the FBI arrest Lawrence’s and put a bag over her head, which he finds to be “very funny and cool.” Also apathetic to the looming disaster are two upbeat morning show hosts played by Cate Blanchett and Tyler Perry.

Don’t Look Up was written and directed by Anchorman and Step Brothers filmmaker Adam McKay, who’s gone on to more prestigious fare in recent years with the release of Oscar nominees The Big Short and Vice. With his latest film, McKay seems to be balancing the satirical political tone of his recent movies with the crowd-pleasing sensibilities of the Will Ferrell comedies that launched his career.

“When I read the script, I thought it was genius. It’s maybe the funniest script I’ve ever read, and I thought it was such a poignant way to get such an important point across,” Lawrence said. DiCaprio added, “I’ve been a fan of [McKay’s] work, gosh, ever since Anchorman and Step Brothers. Then right up to Vice and seeing this transition in how he’s taken on these incredibly complex political issues, but retained this dark, shrewd, intelligent comedic undertone to a lot of them.”

In addition to a previously released teaser for Don’t Look Up, Netflix recently debuted a full clip from the upcoming film. The scene features DiCaprio and Lawrence’s characters unsuccessfully trying to convince the president and her staff of the impending comet.

The huge cast of the Netflix movie also includes Rob Morgan, Mark Rylance, Ron Perlman, Timothée Chalamet, Ariana Grande, Scott Mescudi (aka Kid Cudi), Himesh Patel, Melanie Lynskey, Michael Chiklis and Tomer Sisley.

Don’t Look Up will have a limited theatrical release Dec. 10 ahead of its streaming debut on Netflix Dec. 24.
