To celebrate the launch of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, developer Rockstar Games created a remastered GIF of the franchise’s most iconic moment.
Rockstar Games posted a collection of GIFs and stickers to their Giphy profile, including the iconic “here we go again” meme. The visual, which gained popularity across the internet as a reaction meme, is uttered by protagonist Carl “CJ” Johnson in the somewhat controversial GTA: San Andreas. The remastered GIF doesn’t appear with any overlaying text, which many may consider odd. CJ’s subtitles are seen in nearly every version of the meme. It’s unclear why this aspect of the image is absent. However, given the infamy of the line in internet culture, the visual may not need the text at all.
To set the scene, Carl Johnson returns home to San Andreas after 5-years away but is promptly arrested by Officer Frank Tenpenny, voiced by none other than Samuel L. Jackson. Tenpenny threateningly accuses Carl of having murdered another police officer and assures him he’ll be in touch soon. After suitably terrorizing Carl, the corrupt cop and his partner, Officer Pulaski, throw him out of their car and into the alleyway seen in the GIF. The cops drive off and leave Carl alone to ponder his decision to come home, which he eloquently sums up with the line. “Ah sh-, here we go again.”
So far, a total of 35 GIFs have been posted from the remastered versions of Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, while even more stickers have been released. The stickers range from the games’ logos and wanted stars to the classic “Wasted” text that appears in-game when a player dies. One GIF that will be fresh in the memory of fans is Joey Leone’s line from GTA III, “I got a little job for you, pal,” which was the second clip in the recently released GTA Trilogy trailer.
GTA fans can finally join CJ in saying “here we go again” as The Trilogy – Definitive Edition is now available digitally for PC, PlayStation 5, Playstation 4, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. However, anyone who likes to feel the weight of a game in their hands will have to wait to relive these classic games in all their remastered glory, as physical copies won’t be available until Dec. 7. GTA: The Trilogy will also be available for iOS and Android in the first half of 2022, though no specific date has been confirmed at the time of writing.
