Legend Of Korra: 10 Times The Characters Struggled With Romance

The Legend of Korra takes place 70 years after the final defeat of Fire Lord Ozai, and it’s a new era with new characters, new problems, and new stakes. The new Avatar is Korra, a Water Tribe native, and she doesn’t understand much of the world beyond the confines of her native tribe. When Korra arrived in Republic City, she met many new people.

Korra embarked on a journey not just as the Avatar, but as a person too, and she made many friends, allies, rivals, and enemies along the way. She even formed her own Team Avatar and tried her hand at love and relationships, with mixed results.

Some failed romances happened off-screen, and viewers can use their imaginations to fill in the blanks. Early in Season 1, Pema, the wife of Tenzin the monk, told Korra a shocking fact – that she had stolen Tenzin from Lin Beifong. Korra could hardly believe it.

At one point, Lin was courting Tenzin, but in Pema’s eyes, this relationship wouldn’t work out in the end, so she swooped in and took Tenzin for herself. Lin reacted badly at the time, but she got over it eventually, and she and Tenzin now get along as allies.

9 When Mako & Korra Clashed In Republic City

Avatar Korra’s first forays into love and dating were rough, and she had a tough time trying to build a solid relationship with her pro-bending teammate, Mako the Firebender. At first, Mako didn’t like Korra at all, seeing her as a tiresome troublemaker. Korra confessed her feelings to him, only to be politely rejected.

Korra felt terrible about that, and later, she and Mako argued once again, and they impulsively kissed, a move they both soon regretted. This negatively affected their teamwork, and they barely made it to the pro-bending finals to face Tahno and his Wolfbat team.

8 When Korra Betrayed Bolin’s Feelings By Accident

Korra’s botched attempt to woo Mako resulted in some serious collateral damage, and she broke Bolin’s heart without meaning to. She would never hurt Bolin, but she did just that when Bolin saw Korra and Mako’s kiss with his own eyes.

Bolin had developed a keen interest in Korra by then, and he had flowers ready. But it was all for nothing, and Bolin fell into a funk upon realizing his love interest was pursuing his brother instead. Bolin could hardly even focus during pro-bending fights, and it cost him.

7 When Mako & Asami Hit A Rough Patch

Korra’s clumsy attempts at romance accidentally caused harm not just to Bolin but also to Asami Sato, a friend of Korra’s. When she kissed Mako, Mako was already involved with Asami, and Asami was deeply troubled when Bolin told her about the ill-advised kiss he had witnessed.

By then, Bolin was over it, but Asami took it worse than Bolin did, and she and Mako hit a rough patch. Asami grew frustrated and was convinced that Mako would rather be with Korra than her. Sure enough, they broke up, and Mako started dating Korra instead.

6 When Bolin Got Involved With Princess Eska

Bolin had no trouble moving on from Korra, and in Season 2, he met princess Eska of the Northern Water Tribe and was smitten. He got carried away, though, and found himself stuck in a relationship that he soon regretted. He hadn’t thought things through.

Princess Eska took Bolin’s interest in her seriously, and she demanded that he marry her and stay committed to her for all time. Bolin was less than enthusiastic about this, and he eventually escaped. Eska was furious about her ruined wedding, but she later got over it.

5 When Bolin Made A Bad Impression On Opal

The Legend of Korra Book 3 Opal Beifong

In Season 3, Korra and her team arrived in the fascinating all-metal city of Zaofu, and Bolin met a wonderful girl named Opal. Bolin was a bit smoother at romance than Korra, but not by much, as the Eska disaster proved. But now he’s ready to try again.

Bolin had a much better time with Opal than he did with Eska, but he still had trouble expressing himself clearly. He tried too hard to impress Opal and adopted a bizarre and dishonest persona that Opal didn’t like. Fortunately, Bolin soon dropped the act, and Opal gave him another chance. Things got better from there.

4 When Kuvira Reluctantly Turned On Her Fiance, Bataar Jr.

For a time, Suyin’s adult son, Bataar Jr. was engaged to the villainous Kuvira, since he found her inspiring as a leader and as a person. Kuvira seemed to return his feelings, but the two of them rarely showed any genuine romance on-screen. Their relationship is mainly implied.

At one point, Bataar Jr. was ready to give up on the Earth Empire cause so he and Kuvira could finally marry and be happy elsewhere, but Kuvira felt differently. To Kuvira, her ambitions were more important than her engagement, and she was ready to destroy a building with Bataar Jr. inside if it meant taking out her enemies, too. Bataar Jr. was heartbroken by this attempted betrayal.

3 When Toph Beifong Parted Ways With Kanto

Toph Beifong once had a crush on Sokka, but that never amounted to anything. A little later in her life, Toph became involved with a man named Kanto and had a daughter with him, Lin. However, Toph’s relationship with Kanto didn’t last, and they parted ways.

After that, Toph got involved with a second, unnamed man, and they had a daughter too, Suyin. But it seems Toph and her second partner didn’t stay together either, suggesting that Toph is either terrible with romance, or not as interested in it as she first thought.

2 When Varrick Took Zhu Li’s Feelings For Granted

Varrick is a brilliant businessman and inventor, but he is also known for his dishonest and self-oriented behavior, which alienates him from many people. One exception is the humble and hardworking Zhu Li, a smart lady who is always seen by Varrick’s side. She is his #1 friend and assistant.

Zhu Li soon developed serious feelings about Varrick, and Varrick didn’t notice at all. He continued to take her for granted until Zhu Li stood up for herself, and Varrick was shocked, then impressed. He had finally learned some humility, and after failing to recognize Zhu Li’s heartfelt interest in him, he returned those feelings in full. They were soon happily married.

1 When Bolin Alienated Opal With His Earth Empire Career

Bolin and Opal got along well in Season 3, but that changed in Season 4 when Bolin joined Kuvira’s Earth Empire with the express purpose of helping people in the chaotic remains of the fallen Earth Kingdom. Bolin thought he was doing some good, and maybe he was, but Opal didn’t approve of Bolin siding with Kuvira, period.

During the events of Season 4, Opal was cold toward Bolin due to his Earth Empire allegiance, and a rift formed between them. Even when Bolin quit the Empire, Opal was still skeptical of Bolin’s motives, but they eventually worked things out, and their relationship got back on track.
