Stranger Things: Mike and Eleven’s Spring Break Will Go Horribly Wrong

Netflix’s Stranger Things Day hyped the release of the show’s upcoming fourth season with, among other things, a new teaser trailer. Fans had been wondering how a Season 4 would work now that the Byers family and Eleven have moved out of Hawkins, and Hopper is presumably missing and stuck somewhere in Russia. This latest sneak peek into Season 4 seems to provide an answer, as Mike and Eleven have plans to get together for spring break, and according to Eleven, it’s going to be the best spring break ever. However, this is Stranger Things, a show that’s about kids regularly facing mortal danger, so the opposite is likely to be true.

The new trailer might seem like a mash-up of rapid fire images, but it contains a surprising amount of new information, particularly as it relates to the Byers, Eleven and Mike. It appears that the Byers have relocated to California, and in the first half of the clip, Eleven is dictating a letter she’s writing to Mike. Eleven claims things are going great, and while it seems that she’s putting on her best face, the fact that she’s making a diorama of the home she shared with Hopper for a class presentation combined with kids bullying her tells a different story. Eleven coined the phrase friends don’t lie, but whether or not she’s conscious of it, she seems to be lying to her oldest friend.

From a countdown banner seen in the trailer, spring break will be a day away at some point, and audiences might assume Eleven and/or the Byers are making a return trip to Hawkins. However, a closer look suggests that Mike’s headed west. In one quick shot, Mike and Will are in some sort of distress inside the Surfer Boy Pizza van. It’s possible there’s a pizza restaurant with a surfboard theme in Indiana, but that’s unlikely, especially since the same van transports the Byers kids to school earlier in the trailer. The Byers’ house also appears to be the site of intense shootout, and Mike is visible among others trying to flee.

That means the protagonists will likely be separated into two groups, in at least two separate locations, for at least part of the season, with Mike, Eleven, Will and Jonathan in California while Steve, Dustin, Lucas and Max are in Indiana. The spring break storyline could be anywhere from an episode to most of the season, but no matter how many days Mike and Eleven get to spend together, it seems obvious that something goes disastrously wrong.

Trailers are designed to excite as they obscure, and it’s unclear from the one minute and 12 second clip whether Mike and Eleven find new trouble on the west coast or if old trouble follows them. With so much harrowing action, Eleven’s much anticipated best spring break ever might turn out the be Stranger Things 4’s dramatic climax.
