Disney’s First Pirates of the Caribbean Film Gets 4K UHD Release

Jack Sparrow’s first appearance can be enjoyed all over again. Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl is now available in greater definition than ever before.

Disney has announced that the 2003 Pirates of the Carribean film which started the iconic franchise, will be available, for the first time ever, on 4K Ultra HD Disc, in spectacular HDR picture quality and Dolby Atmos audio. It is scheduled to be released on Jan. 2, 2022.

Directed by Gore Verbinski, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl told the story of Captain Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, Elizabeth Swann and the cursed, undead crew of the titular ghost ship, the Black Pearl. While the film itself generally received positive reviews, critics and audiences highlighted Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow as a point of praise. The film spawned several sequels.

The franchise’s most recent instalment was 2017’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, which saw the end of all curses upon the sea with the destruction of Poseidon’s trident. The post-credits scene seemed to tease the return of Davy Jones and producer Jerry Bruckheimer teased that a sequel — the final adventure in the franchise — was in development. However, no major announcements have been made since.

A reboot was in development back in 2019, but it was cancelled soon after. Another Pirates of the Caribbean project is in the works, with actor Margot Robbie attached to star in the female-led film and Christina Hodson attached to write. The untitled does not yet have a release date.

As for Depp, legal issues have led to a somewhat uncertain status in Hollywood, which seemingly contributed to the decision to reboot the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. In response, fans launched a petition to keep Johnny Depp in the Disney franchise.

The synopsis for Curse of the Black Pearl reads:

The roguish yet charming Captain Jack Sparrow’s (Johnny Depp) idyllic pirate life capsizes after his nemesis, the wily Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), steals his ship, the Black Pearl, and later attacks the town of Port Royal, kidnapping the governor’s beautiful daughter Elizabeth (Kiera Knightly). In a gallant attempt to rescue her and recapture the Black Pearl, Elizabeth’s childhood friend Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) joins forces with Jack. What Will doesn’t know is that a cursed treasure has doomed Barbossa and his crew to live forever as the undead!
