Warning!! This article contains spoilers for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, available now.
With the Universal Church taking over minds, the Guardians have to think fast in order to save the universe. Realizing animals may be immune, the time has come to go to Lady Hellbender for help — but she’s still furious with the team. In order to regain her trust, it’ll take a massive act — one no bigger than defeating and capturing the legendary Fin Fang Foom. They hope that presenting this beast to Lady Hellbender will abate her rage and help convince her to join them in stopping the galactic conquest of Grand Unifier Raker and the Universal Church of Truth.
The battle with Foom follows a similar pattern to the previous monster fight against the Dweller-in-Darkness. This fight has two stages and makes use of Star-Lord’s newest elemental ability, fire. With the exception of Rocket, the rest of the team will be on standby mode until Drax throws large, heavy items at Foom to stun him, making the dragon vulnerable to attack.
Breaking Down The Fight Against Fin Fang Foom
Star-Lord must melt the ice covering Foom’s body during the first stage of the fight. He can do so by using his new flame elemental ability. Once the ice has shattered, the dragon will be vulnerable to attack from the rest of the Guardians.
During the second phase of the fight, the only Guardians who can regularly damage Foom are Star-Lord and Rocket since they have ranged weapons. Foom will alternate between breathing a stream of fire, swiping his neck across the ice and slamming his claws into the ice. Gamora, Drax and Groot have a small window of opportunity to attack Foom when the dragon’s claws are stuck in the ice. After a while, Foom will rain fireballs and ice debris onto the battlefield.
When the shower of fire and ice falls onto the battlefield, a large chunk of ice will land. The team will prep this chunk of ice for Drax to throw on Star-Lord’s command via a QTE prompt. This attack will stun Foom and his head will slump onto the ice. Players need to wait for these large chunks of ice to fall in order to deal major damage to Foom and defeat him.
Strategies To Defeat Fin Fang Foom
The Guardians do minimal damage to Foom unless he has been stunned. Only Rocket’s abilities and Star-Lord’s elemental guns can hurt Foom until his claws are stuck in the ice, at which point Gamora, Drax and Groot will attack on their own. It is not worth the effort to use standard abilities against Foom once he’s stunned; instead, players should make use of each Guardian’s mega ability to deal maximum damage.
When Foom barrages the battlefield with ice and fire, Star-Lord will need the extra protection from his mega ability Shield of Spartax. Star-Lord will also need to be on the lookout for downed party members throughout the fight, as they frequently get caught in Foom’s blasts. Players should exercise patience and wait until Foom is no longer targeting an area, shown by the red circles on the ice, in order to heal allies. It is also good to call for a Huddle once Foom has been stunned, if it is available, as the stat boost will be beneficial.
What Players Get For Defeating Fin Fang Foom
Ultimately, the Guardians’ plan to enlist Lady Hellbender backfires when she realizes they’ve killed the majestic Fin Fang Foom. Thankfully, Groot is able to revive the fallen dragon with his newly-unlocked mega ability, Gift of the Florae. With Foom alive and Lady Hellbender impressed, she’ll pledge her army to assist you against the Universal Church.
Groot’s mega ability is easily the most useful reward here. Unlike the rest of the Guardians, Groot did not need to face his biggest fear to learn this ability. Instead, the situation required him to step outside of his comfort zone and be a show-off. Gift of the Florae both revives all downed party members and resets their ability cooldowns. As an added bonus, Groot will automatically revive Star-Lord if he runs out of health as long as Groot has his mega ability available.
