Sony Pictures released a frightening new trailer for Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.
The trailer features plenty of jump-scare-inducing imagery as the members of STARS look to stop the sinister Umbrella Corporation. The trailer mostly features imagery and scenery pulled from the first game — including more footage of Lisa Trevor, the Spencer mansion, and a callback to the famous “Itchy. Tasty.” note — but also suggests that Claire Redfield, the protagonist of Resident Evil 2 and Code: Veronica, will play a bigger role in the movie as she unravels the conspiracy surrounding Umbrella and its various monster-creating viruses.
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City takes place in a different continuity from the previous series of live-action Resident Evil movies, which began in 2002 and were all directed by Paul W.S. Anderson. The new movie will be written and directed by 47 Meters Down‘s Johannes Roberts, and stars Mazerunner‘s Kaya Scodelario as Claire Redfield and The Flash‘s Robbie Amell as her brother, the STARS officer Chris Redfield. Killjoys star Hannah John-Kamen will portray Jill Valentine, the series’ master of unlocking, while Avan Jogia will portray Leon Kennedy, a rookie cop whose first day on the job coincides with the zombie outbreak in Raccoon City. The movie will also star Tom Hopper as series villain Albert Wesker, Lily Gao as the mysterious Ada Wong, Donal Logue as Chief Brian Irons, and Neal McDonough as William Birkin, the scientist behind Umbrella’s viral research.
Roberts previously stated that his goal with the new movie is to return to the horror that defined earlier games in Capcom‘s beloved survival horror series. “I wanted to go back to the horror of it all. I wanted scares and atmosphere rather than full-on action. I think fans of the game felt the same,” Roberts said. The director has also teased that if Welcome to Raccoon City is successful enough to warrant a sequel, he would like to adapt the events of the fan-favorite Resident Evil 4 next. The game focuses on the character of Leon and is frequently cited by critics as one of the best games ever made. Roberts recently stated that he is “obsessed” with the game, saying, “I could very much see that becoming part of the next installment… There’s a lot of interesting lore and tiny details that we have brought into this movie, but would be amazing to expand on.”
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City will premiere in theaters on Nov. 24.
