The Dweller-in-Darkness appears at the end of chapter four in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Lady Hellbender‘s pet monster is the first major boss in the game, and the battle plays out over three stages. While the Guardians take turns providing hints about what their goals are throughout the fight, this guide will walk players through the encounter and explain how to defeat the Dweller-in-Darkness.
The team hasn’t had to fight many substantial foes up to this point. Players who aren’t fully familiar with all the combat system has to offer may struggle to progress past the first stage, although it is the easiest and least chaotic. Ultimately, the battle focuses on Star-Lord’s elemental freeze ability, which he can use when the beast is vulnerable to freeze it and allow his teammates to take care of business.
Breaking Down The Fight Against The Dweller-In-Darkness
The first stage against the Dweller-in-Darkness tasks the Guardians with removing two of its limbs. The Dweller will slam its tentacles onto the ground individually and then, once it has been staggered, droops with both tentacles vulnerable to attack. The Guardians must deal enough damage to one of the limbs in order to trigger a Quick Time Event where Star-Lord can freeze the tentacle. Gamora will then chop off the appendage and the Guardians then focus on destroying the second limb.
The Dweller uses its remaining two tentacles to continue trying to squish the Guardians in stage two. The monster also shoots Jackogels, the spiky creatures surrounded by gel cubes, into the arena. The Guardians must again focus on one tentacle at a time and then have Star-Lord freeze the damaged tentacle before the Dweller can heal itself. Gamora will slice off the final two limbs once they are frozen.
The final stage sees the Guardians bombarded with Jackogels while also needing to contend with the Dweller’s new attack. The Dweller will shoot out a small object that Star-Lord must freeze as soon as the prompt becomes available. Drax will then throw this frozen mass at the Dweller’s head. The Guardians must repeat this process until the Dweller’s health is diminished. With the Dweller now defeated and Groot saved, the Guardians can go pay their Nova Corps fine.
Strategies To Defeat The Dweller-In-Darkness
If players do not deal enough damage to the Dweller or miss a prompt to use Star-Lord’s elemental freeze, the stage will continue in a loop. The first stage requires players to stagger the Dweller in order to deal heavy damage to one of its tentacles. Players can build up the stagger meter, which is indicated below the Dweller’s health, by using character abilities and shooting with Star-Lord’s gun. Drax’s Destroy ability deals heavy stagger, as does Star-Lord’s Charged Shot ability.
Once the Dweller is staggered, players need to bring the tentacle’s health bar down to zero. Gamora’s Deadly Strike deals considerable damage, while using Groot’s Entangle before the Dweller retracts its limb can extend the time the Guardians have to deal damage. Once the limb’s health has been depleted, the Dweller will insert it into one of the pools of goo and players will be prompted to use Star-Lord’s freeze ability.
Players can use the same strategy in stage two in order to destroy the last two limbs. Using Star-Lord’s elemental freeze is highly effective against the Jackogels once they appear onto the field, ideally followed by Rocket’s Cluster Flark Bomb. Freezing the minor enemies makes them much easier to destroy and allows the team to focus on the Dweller. The same is true for the third stage of the fight when the Dweller sprays the field with Jackogels. Freeze these enemies and drop a bomb to clear the area. Star-Lord can then be ready to freeze the projectile that Drax will throw at the Dweller.
