Dr. Dre is busy creating music for an as-yet-unannounced Grand Theft Auto game.
The insider information comes by way of Snoop Dogg, who opened up about the legendary rapper and hip-hop producer’s current projects. Speaking on the Rolling Stones Music Now podcast, Snoop Dogg said, “I do know [Dr. Dre] is in the studio. I do know he’s making great f-ing music. And some of his music is connected to the GTA game that’s coming out. So I think that that will be the way that his music will be released, through the GTA video game.” When Rolling Stone reached out to developer Rockstar Games for comment, it declined to speak on the matter.
While it’s possible that Snoop Dogg is referring to the upcoming Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition, it’s more likely that Dr. Dre is working on an unannounced game. Fans are speculating the project to be Grand Theft Auto VI, even though recent reports indicate Rockstar Games’ next open-world action experience is still a ways off from release.
Both Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg have appeared on the soundtracks for various Grand Theft Auto games. Most recently, the two’s music could be heard on the West Coast Classics radio station, as featured in GTA V. While cruising around the city of Los Santos, players could listen to classic tunes like “Still D.R.E.,” “The Next Episode (feat. Snoop Dogg)” and “Gin and Juice.” If what Snoop Dogg says is true, this will mark the first time Dr. Dre has created music specifically for the long-running series of games.
Little is currently known about Grand Theft Auto VI. Leaks from a variety of industry insiders suggest that Rockstar Games’ next original project will see the return of multiple playable protagonists, one of whom is female, a first for the franchise. Further rumors suggest that the game will return to Vice City, GTA‘s take on Miami. The sixth mainline game in the series is said to be scheduled for a 2023-2024 launch window and will only be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
As for fans looking to recapture the past, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition takes the classic PlayStation 2 games of GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas and gives them a fresh coat of paint. These updated games will be available on all modern consoles, including the Nintendo Switch, on Nov. 11.
