Supergirl: Nia Learns the Dream Realm Is Much Larger Than She Realized

Nia’s growth over Supergirl Season 6 has focused a great deal on her learning how to control her powers as the Dreamer. Part of this has come from her consistently exploring the “Dream Realm,” specifically a mystical dream forest. Season 6, Episode 16, “Nightmare in National City,” revealed there’s much more to the Dream Realm than Nia ever realized.

To find the Dream Totem before Nyxly in the latest episode of Supergirl, Nia worked with her estranged sister Maeve to find the Totem in the Dream Realm. During their search, Maeve revealed to Nia that the other realm goes far beyond Nia’s forest. Called the Dream Expanse, the area past the dream forest seems to connect to the rest of humanity’s, and possibly the entire universe’s, dreams.

Nia and Maeve’s adventure into the Dream Expanse consisted of only exploring the maze where the Dream Totem was kept. Maeve hinted at there being a much larger world to explore when she found out Nia had never left the forest before. With Nia getting a true handle on her powers, her ability to explore the Dream Realm has expanded in ways she never could have done before.

Nyxly’s new power gauntlets allow her to enter the Dream Realm at will. With her gaining possession of the Dream Totem at the end of the Supergirl episode, Nyxly will have full access to the Dream Realm and probably anyone’s dreams as a result. If Nyxly can invade people’s dreams, that makes Nia the only real tool the Super Friends have to stop her.

The Dream Realm is known to house terrifying nightmare creatures, like the one that escaped when Nyxly entered the Dream Realm the second time. The nightmare creatures have to have an origin point somewhere in the dream world. Perhaps a “Nightmare Realm” exists within the dream world, which might be what Nyxly ends up using to take revenge on her father.

Another possibility is that Nia could learn to physically travel to different places via the Dream Realm. Nia is part Naltorian, an alien species from the planet Naltor, meaning aliens like Nia and Kara have access to the dream world. If Nia learned how to travel via dreams, she could essentially travel planet-to-planet without ever stepping foot in a spaceship.

Seeing as the Super Friends currently have no way to get to the Fifth Dimension, the Dream Realm may even act as the bridge that connects Earth-Prime to the Imps’ homeland. Nyxly may have lost the Hope Totem, but the Dream Realm gives her access to a literal world of unknown and dangerous power to channel. If she uses the Dream Realm as both a way home and a way to attack her home, Nia’s growing knowledge and power as the Dreamer may be the only thing that can stop her.

To see how the Dream Realm comes into play, Supergirl airs Tuesdays on The CW.
