Squid Game’s Biggest Plot Holes & Unanswered Questions | CBR

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Season 1 of Squid Game, now streaming on Netflix.

Netflix’s Squid Game dives deep into the monsters mankind can be as they’re driven by greed. It focuses on folks in debt being taken to a mysterious island to play sadistic childhood games — some of which involve them partnering up, while others require participants to take each other out to win millions of dollars. However, as Gi-hun and some heroic faces rebel against their shady handlers, a few plot holes and unanswered questions arise.

Why Does No One Spot Jun-ho?

Jun-ho’s a cop looking for his brother, In-ho, on the island after finding clues that has him thinking he was kidnapped. He sneaks into one of the cars and when it gets on the ship, he pretends to be gassed before assaulting one of the handlers. He then switches into the man’s costume, but the problem is, this happens right below the deck where other operatives are. They would’ve likely heard the commotion, and given how tight security is, it’s surprising no one caught Jun-ho swapping clothes or disposing of a body.

What Happened To The Camera Operator?

On the island, some of the corrupt handlers use deceased victims for their organs to ship to the black market. While they are mostly snuffed out, the Front Man never addresses the final one remaining: the rogue camera operator. It’s obvious this person exists to help cover up the scheme and deceive other operators in the control room, but this person’s betrayal is totally ignored by the boss.

Why Does the Front Man Ignore His Chamber?

When the Front Man heads down with gunmen to the island’s cave that connects to the ocean, he realizes someone is killing off his men after infiltrating as a handler. However, he doesn’t check his own VIP chamber, which is next to the cave, right away. Not only would this have been an obvious place to investigate, but it was also where Jun-ho was hiding. Instead, the agents are sent to other parts of the base, leaving Jun-ho to garner evidence in the room in an uncharacteristic bit of oversight from the Front Man.

How Is Jun-ho’s Phone Not Rendered Useless?

Jun-ho spends days pretending to be a handler, and while he does this, he is dependent on his phone to gather information. However, his phone is somehow charged the whole time despite him not taking a charger. The phone not dying is an extreme suspension of disbelief. In addition, he should have been spotted with the phone because of the cameras in his room. This is all done to protect the concept of the phone, allowing the cop to try to call his superior when he escapes the island.

Why Doesn’t Gi-hun Bring Sae-Byeok’s Mom Over?

Kang Sae-byeok from Squid Game

Sae-Byeok dies despite Gi-hun trying to protect her from Sang-woo. Sadly, after Gi-hun wins the millions, he does not spend his money on anything. While it’s understandable that he doesn’t want to indulge in greed after all of this, it’s surprising he doesn’t even use that money to bring Sae-Byeok’s mom into South Korea. Her dad died trying to enter the country, and all she wanted was to get her mother here to be with her little brother. Instead, Gi-hun gives the boy to Sang-woo’s mom out of guilt, as Gi-hun’s victory resulted in Sang-woo’s death. He takes some time, but he eventually uses his winnings. However, with all the money he has, it’s still an odd gesture, especially with Sae-Byeok’s mom still separated from her son and Sang-woo’s mom unaware of what truly happened to her son.

The first season of Squid Game is now streaming on Netflix. At this time, a second season has not yet been announced.
