Newly posted concept art from Venom: Let There Be Carnage gives a look at a potential early version of the titular villain — and it’s terrifying.
The images, which were posted on ArtStation by Hatch Effects, show an alternate model for Carnage. There are a fair number of differences between this model and the one that appears in Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
Shortly after the success of 2018’s Venom, Sony announced that it was working on a sequel featuring Woody Harrelson as Cletus Kasady/Carnage. Originally, the movie was slated to release in 2020. However, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sony pushed Venom: Let There Be Carnage to 2021. The movie itself sees Eddie Brock working on his relationship with Venom while reporting on Kasady, an imprisoned serial killer. Things take a turn for the worse when Kasady gets hold of a symbiote of his own, which he uses to escape prison and wreak havoc on San Francisco. In the process, he recruits Frances Barrison/Shriek and together the two take on Venom and his allies.
Created by David Michelinie and Mark Bagley, Carnage first appeared in 1992’s The Amazing Spider-Man #359. A symbiote, Carnage bonds to serial killer Cletus Kasady, who Michelinie and Erik Larsen introduced a year earlier in 1991’s The Amazing Spider-Man #344. The powerful and ruthless villain has proven one of Peter Parker/Spider-Man’s fiercest foes, and the threat posed by Carnage has required the wall-crawler to enlist help on several occasions.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage is the second movie to be released in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. The studio currently has a number of movies in various stages of development. Most noteworthy are Morbius and Kraven the Hunter. The former, which stars Jared Leto as Michael Morbius, is set to release on Jan. 28, 2022, and feature Michael Keaton returning as Adrian Toomes/Vulture after debuting as the villain in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. Details are scarce about the latter, but Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as Kraven. Kraven the Hunter is set for Jan. 13, 2023.
Since hitting theaters earlier this month, Venom: Let There Be Carnage has earned more than $280 million against a budget of approximately $110 million. Currently, the movie holds a 60 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. As of writing, Sony has not officially confirmed that a third Venom movie is in the works. However, Hardy has said he’s already thinking about Venom 3.
