Warner Bros. and DC Films have released the first official TV spot for The Batman.
A shortened remix of The Batman trailer that premiered at DC’s FanDome, the TV spot teases the Dark Knight’s cat-and-mouse game with Edward Nashton/The Riddler while also highlighting his encounters with Selina Kyle/Catwoman and Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin. It ends with the Caped Crusader uttering his now-famous line from the film (“I’m vengeance”) after giving an unsuspecting criminal a vicious beatdown.
The Batman was announced in 2014, with then-star Ben Affleck directing, producing, and co-writing. This version of the film had the Dark Knight going up against Joe Manganiello’s Deathstroke after the latter discovers Batman’s secret identity in Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League. “It was a really dark story in which Deathstroke was like a shark or a horror movie villain that was dismantling Bruce’s life from the inside out,” said Manganiello in December 2020. “It was this systemic thing: He killed everyone close to Bruce and destroyed his life to try and make him suffer because he felt that Bruce was responsible for something that happened to him.”
Affleck’s scrapped film would’ve also introduced Batgirl to the DC Extended Universe and had what Manganiello described as “a strong David Fincher vibe.” However, for multiple reasons, Affleck became less and less involved with The Batman over time, starting with him stepping down as director in January 2017. Matt Reeves replaced him as co-writer and director later that year, with Affleck initially staying onboard as the film’s star. Robert Pattinson eventually replaced him in May 2019, at which point Affleck stepped away from the DCEU altogether. He has since signed on to play Bruce Wayne one last time in The Flash solo movie releasing in 2022.
Despite its many differences from Affleck’s vision for the film, The Batman appears to have a similar “David Fincher vibe,” with fans comparing its early footage to Fincher’s crime thriller Seven. “For me, what’s really important about this iteration is that a lot of the other stories are very much about how he had to master his fear and master himself in order to become Batman and that in that Batman state, he’s sort of in his best self,” said Reeves in August 2020.
The Batman opens in theaters March 4, 2022.
