If the cast and crew of HBO Max’s Peacemaker are to be believed, the Suicide Squad spinoff series could have a breakout star in the eponymous anti-hero’s pet eagle, Eagly.
“James, I remember you said to me on-set one day that only Eagly competed with [Chukwudi Iwuji] in terms of being a really great actor,” executive producer Peter Safran told series creator, writer and co-director James Gunn during the Peacemaker panel at DC FanDome 2021. Gunn added, “We have not brought up Eagly, who, of course, steals the show.”
Peacemaker star John Cena, who plays Christopher Smith/Peacemaker himself, discussed Eagly as well. “He’s Peacemaker’s pet eagle and he’s Peacemaker’s best friend,” Cena said. “As a dowel with some green tape on it, Eagly stole the show.” Gunn laughed, replying, “Yeah, that’s true.” It should also be noted that Gunn recently cleared up some confusion regarding the eagle’s name, writing on Twitter that it is, in fact, spelled “Eagly,” not “Eagley.”
Viewers caught their first glimpse of Eagly in an official Peacemaker clip released earlier this month, in which the eagle can be spotted in the backseat of Peacemaker’s car, much to the concern of the anti-hero’s handlers. Eagly got some more screentime in Peacemaker‘s FanDome teaser trailer, in which he can be seen walking alongside the rest of the crew, riding shotgun in Peacemaker’s car and, finally, hugging Peacemaker with his wings.
Set to premiere its eight-episode first season on Thursday, Jan. 13, Peacemaker spins out of the events of Gunn’s DC Extended Universe film The Suicide Squad, which released earlier this year. The film marked the live-action debut of Christopher Smith/Peacemaker, who was originally created by Joe Gill and Pat Boyette in 1966’s Fightin’ 5 #40. While Peacemaker was seemingly killed in the film, a post-credits scene revealed that he had survived his injuries and was being tapped for another world-saving mission by the government officials behind Task Force X.
Peacemaker will see The Suicide Squad stars Cena, Steve Agee and Jennifer Holland reprise their roles as Peacemaker, John Economos and Emilia Harcourt, respectively. The series also stars Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, Chukwudi Iwuji as Clemson Murn, Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase (aka Vigilante) and Robert Patrick as Auggie Smith (Peacemaker’s father).
Peacemaker premieres Jan. 13, 2022 on HBO Max.
