Admittedly, the world of One Piece is a weird and out-there place that’s filled with many strange characters with unique and sometimes silly personality quirks. Yet despite their weirdness, a lot of them fit in pretty well since the world is just as strange as they are, but some characters from this anime cross a line into some pretty creepy territory.
Sometimes it’s due to their bizarre appearance, or because of their terrifying strength, or a rather intimidating personality, or even all three of these things wrapped up in one. Whatever the case, One Piece has seen some creepy characters over the years.
10 Charlotte Opera Looks Like A Gooey Mess
Charlotte Opera is one of Big Mom’s many children and one of the many Big Mom Pirates‘ officers, which is also known as the “Minister of Whipped Cream” on their main territory of Totto Land. While he may not be the best Big Mom Pirates fighter, he is one of the stranger-looking ones, completely covered in half-melted cream, which gives Charlotte a rather off-putting appearance.
With a confident and analytical personality, that weird goopy appearance, and the power to create and manipulate cream, Opera might not be the most intimidating villain in One Piece, but his out-there character design is a combo of bizarre and creepy, even by this anime’s standards.
9 Caribou’s Twisted Actions Match His Creepy Appearance
Wet-Haired Caribou was one of the earliest new enemies the Straw Hats faced after the two-year time skip, and a pretty creepy one at that. This Caribou Pirates co-captain earned his reputation by being a ruthless killer, justifying it with his belief in God and doing it all with that eerily permanent smile on his face.
His Swamp-Swamp Fruit powers also let him turn his body into a murky, muddy, and bottomless swamp which he can use to suffocate his enemies and store just about anything he needs. He can even use this to kidnap people, like when he planned to sell the mermaids of Fish-Man Island.
8 Dellinger’s Truly Bloodthirsty
Despite being a member of Doflamingo’s crew, Dellinger almost seems too scrawny and carefree to be threatening, but his attitude in battle says otherwise. This half-human, half-fighting fish-man is quite bloodthirsty when he’s given the chance, showing no mercy no matter how strong or weak his opponent is.
Dellinger believes that might makes right, and is rather confident in his abilities to boot. Not only does he have the savage fighting skills to back that up more often than not, but he does it with those sharp fangs out and a sadistic look in his eyes.
7 Hody Jones, A Monster Without A Cause
Hody Jones was the main antagonist of the Fish-Man Island Arc, who at first seemed to be a rebel with ideals. Hody committed plenty of horrible atrocities across Fish-Man Island to stoke fear and hatred of humans in his fellow Fish-men, all while downing Energy Steroids that made him look more and more like a monster.
Between Hody’s strength and increasingly monstrous appearance, the most terrifying thing about Hody might just be his reasons for his actions. They don’t stem from desires of revenge or experience, Hody justifies his actions with nothing other than pure hatred for humans, calling it the same as pride.
6 Sugar May Look Innocent, But She’s Anything But
At first, Sugar looks like an ordinary and innocent child, but looks are deceiving. Sugar is actually much older than she appears, and anything but innocent to boot. As a key component to helping Doflamingo take over Dressrosa, Sugar uses her Devil Fruit powers to turn anyone who objects into a toy, not only subjecting them to harsh labor but erasing their memory.
While she occasionally does act like a child, Sugar is terrifyingly smart as well as insanely cruel towards anyone who stands in her way. Sugar may not look intimidating, but her actions, powers, and personality do it all for her.
5 Gecko Moria Goes All Out On Being Spooky
A former member of the Seven Warlords of the Sea and Captain of the Thriller Bark Pirates, the ghoulish Gecko Moria is as fearsome as he is creepy. With an army of the undead at his command and the gigantic and eery half-ship, half-island Thriller Bark Moria definitely goes all out on that spooky theme of his.
With his Devil Fruit power over shadows, Moria can animate his own shadow or steal other people’s shadows to transfer into his minions or empower himself. Doing so makes the original owner of that shadow weak to sunlight, forcing them to either get their shadow back somehow or remain in darkness forever, as was the case for so many of his victims.
4 Dr. Hogback, A Man Of Sick Obsession
Dr. Hogback is a renowned surgeon, who joined Gecko Moria in order to further his research and quite possibly bring the dead back to life, to which he succeeded to an extent. Combining his own genius with Moria’s powers, he created the zombie army, stitching remains together and reanimating them, not too much unlike the story of Frankenstein.
While he may not be as powerful as Moria, what makes Hogback so creepy is a mix of his disregard for his patients and creation and his sick obsessions particularly with his beloved Cindry, who rejected him in life. Hogback revived her as a zombie only to make her his servant and abuse her, showing how little he cared for her apart from her beauty.
3 Ceasar Clown Really Puts The “Mad” in Mad Scientist
Sick, twisted, and cruel are some of the many words that describe Caesar Clown. Caesar is a scientist driven only by his own desires to cause pain, suffering, and destruction to anyone and anything he sets his sights on. He lacks any shred of empathy, pleased by the destruction that his weapons cause and putting even children through torturous and horrifying experiments.
To back up his monstrous actions, his appearance is rather ghoulish too, pale and ghostly thanks to his Gas-Gas Fruit power while having a mad grin on his face more often than not. His power over gas in all forms is nothing to laugh at either.
2 Many Fear The Violent & Ravenous Big Mom
Charlotte Linlin, aka Big Mom, is the captain of the Big Mom Pirates and one of the Four Emperors of the New World, and she definitely earned it. On top of her large size, she’s extremely strong (known for taking out battleships alone with no effort) and practically hungry at all times. Many fear Big Mom for her destructive actions when she’s hungry.
With the Soul-Soul Fruit, Big Mom is also able to steal the souls of anyone who feels fear. She can transplant those souls into things to act as her servants like Moria, though she can also take away her victim’s remaining lifespan and kill them instantly. A terrifying power in the hands of a terrifying pirate.
1 Lily Carnation Is Beyond Horrifying
At first Lily, Carnation looks like a cute and harmless little flower, but Lily’s true form reveals its true nature. Using Omatsuri as its host, Lily consumes people, absorbing them into itself and taking their powers along with them, becoming more horrifying as it grows larger and more powerful.
During the movie Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island, Lily absorbed the Straw Hat crew in a bone-chilling display and almost killed Luffy as he battled Omatsuri as well. While many of One Piece’s villains can have a silly and comedic side, Lily is one-hundred percent a monster whose only instinct is to consume.
