Katsuki Bakugo, also known by his nickname Kacchan, is Izuku Midoriya’s childhood friend and fellow classmate at U.A. High School. As opposed to Midoriya who is much more mild-mannered, Bakugo is quite aggressive, directing most of his hostility towards his friend.
Bakugo is a very skilled hero-in-training and has a very powerful Quirk. He is confident in his abilities, making him quite arrogant and antagonistic at times. However, over the course of the 5 seasons of My Hero Academia, Bakugo has grown into a much more likable character.
10 He Tries To Protect His Childhood Friend
While the U.A. students are in the Beast’s Forest being trained by the Pussycats, the Vanguard Action Squad attacks. Everything erupts into chaos as the students fight to fend off the villains.
The villains attack with the primary objective to capture Bakugo. As the forest burns, the villains succeed in taking Bakugo. Before he fades into Oboro’s Cloud with Dabi, Bakugo warns Midoriya not to follow him. Bakugo knew Midoriya would most likely try to save him and he warns him in an effort to protect him.
9 He Resists The Villains
Once the villains get Bakugo back to their hideout, they present their cause to him and the promise of power in hopes of persuading him to join their side. While Bakugo may seem like the obvious one to defect to the villain’s side, his answer to the villains is a surprising “No.”
In a flashback to his childhood, a young Bakugo watches All Might on the TV. Bakugo looks up to All Might and wants to be like him. He lets the villains know that he wants to win like All Might and will never join them.
8 He Blames Himself For All Might Losing His Power
After the rescue of Bakugo and the Kamino Incident, All Might officially retires. All Might’s retirement affects Bakugo more than anyone realizes. One night, when he challenges Midoriya to a fight, Bakugo finally breaks down and reveals his feelings.
In one of Bakugo’s more humbling moments, he cries and blames himself for All Might losing his power. He thinks that if he had been stronger, All Might would not have had to rescue him and he would still have his power.
7 He Fires Everyone Up
Growing up and always being praised for his Quirk, Bakugo is accustomed to being first and is focused on winning. He always wants to be the best and tries to be the number 1 in all situations. His idea of a hero is someone who never gives up until they win.
Because of his desire to win and the way he gets fired up in battle, Bakugo inadvertently becomes a key motivator to his classmates. He likes doing things his own way with a take-charge attitude, and, should he ever decide to, he would make a great leader.
6 He Keeps Midoriya’s Secret
Bakugo is a very smart individual, having some of the top grades in his class. He is also very observant. Because of this, he is able to figure out the origin of Midoriya’s Quirk by piecing together context clues.
He confronts both Midoriya and All Might about it, and, although neither admits to it outright, Bakugo figures out that Midoriya gained his Quirk from All Might. After he and Midoriya fight and All Might breaks them up, Bakugo tells them he will keep the secret. Bakugo knows the trouble it will cause and how dangerous it will be if the secret gets out.
5 He Actually Helps Deku Become Better
After the fight at Ground Zero, both Bakugo and Midoriya are put under house arrest in the dorms. Their punishment also includes cleaning. During their first cleaning session, Midoriya asks Bakugo about his fighting moves.
Surprisingly, Bakugo gives Midoriya some helpful advice. All Might notes that the two have become proper rivals, pushing each other to become stronger. Bakugo wants to surpass Midoriya, and Midoriya wants to go even higher than Bakugo.
4 He Just Wants To Be Acknowledged
Bakugo has a very aggressive approach to becoming a hero. With his explosive Quirk, Bakugo knows he is one of the best and works hard at his goal of becoming the number one hero. Bakugo has dreamed of becoming a hero since he was a child, and has always looked up to All Might.
One of the reasons Bakugo hates Midoriya so much is because he is recognized by All Might, someone both of them have looked up to. Bakugo shows his vulnerable side when he admits that he wants to be acknowledged and can’t stand feeling like Midoriya is looking down on him.
3 He Wants To Save People To Win
In the Joint Training Battle between Class 1-A and Class 1-B, Bakugo is placed on a team with Jiro, Sato, and Sero. In true Bakugo fashion, he confidently takes the lead while his classmates serve supporting roles.
However, to everyone’s surprise, when his teammates are in danger, Bakugo tells them he will be there to save them. Sure enough, when his teammates are trapped by Class 1-B, Bakugo comes to the rescue, and All Might realizes that he’s putting to practice the idea of “saving people to win.”
2 He Plays The Drums For The School Festival
When the annual U.A. school festival rolls around, Class 1-A meets to decide what to do. Since Jiro has a lot of instruments in her dorm room, the students decide to form a band and put on a concert for the entire school.
Jiro plays the electric guitar and provides lead vocals while Tokoyami and Kaminari play backup instruments. Bakugo plays the drums and is actually very good at it, impressing his classmates. He decides to join the band and is very enthusiastic about “murdering” everyone at U.A. with their musical skills.
1 He Wants To Impress The Best Jeanist
During the first work-study program, Bakugo goes to train under Best Jeanist. Best Jeanist tries to reform Bakugo’s attitude, even changing his hair to make him a more approachable hero. Although it seems as if Bakugo hates being there, he actually respects and admires Best Jeanist.
When Best Jeanist tells Bakugo his hero name is childish, he actually takes the advice to heart (although he would never admit to it). He settles on a hero name, but he refuses to tell anyone because he wants Best Jeanist to be the first to know.
