According to the clothing retailer boohooMAN, searches for the term “red jumpsuit” have spiked 170 percent since Squid Game found surprising blockbuster success on Netflix last month. On October 31, expect geometrically masked soldiers to watch over the trick-or-treating festivities just as their televised inspirations monitored the fatal events of Squid Game.
Those dressing as Squid Game’s imposing enforcers this Halloween will have no shortage of participants to loom over. The green tracksuits donned by the debt-ridden participants of the games have likewise skyrocketed in search engine popularity over the past month. Green tracksuits currently sit at number one in Amazon’s Adult Costume category as Halloween approaches.
Squid Game arrived just in time for last minute Halloween shoppers, as it carries all the components of the perfect All Hallows’ Eve trend. The series’ dark themes, cultural relevancy and simple, yet distinctive costuming all lend to Halloween success.
However, those interested in lording over their Halloween party guests as a Squid Game soldier should act fast. BoohooMan predicts that red jumpsuits will sell out well before the holiday arrives, because Squid Game fans aren’t the only one’s getting in on the red jumpsuit action. Netflix’s Money Heist, another successful foreign language series on the platform, also prominently features red jumpsuits, and when the series first debuted in May 2017 red jumpsuit searches increased 203 percent. There may be fans looking to recognize Money Heist this Halloween as the Spanish series heads into its final chapter, with Part 5, Volume 2 arriving on Netflix Dec. 3.
The power of suggestion is clearly strong among the Netflix viewer turned retail consumer, and the fickle winds of streaming popularity have served to benefit clothing retailers who carry jumpsuits and tracksuits this Halloween season. There’s no telling which retailer will serve to benefit from Netflix’s next hit, especially when a series such as Squid Game received such unexpected and overnight success on the platform.
Due to Squid Game’s popularity, rumors of a Season 2 have already begun to circulate, but all nine episodes of the high-stakes first season are currently available on Netflix for audiences to catch up on before Halloween.
