Madonna has revealed that she turned down a role in The Matrix film franchise.
The pop star said as much while chatting with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, while also sharing that she also turned down the role of Catwoman in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns and a lead role in Showgirls. “I saw them both, and I regret that I turned down Catwoman,” Madonna shared. “Showgirls? No.” The entertainer further described Michelle Pfeiffer’s portrayal of the feline Fatale as “fierce.”
“I also turned down the role in The Matrix,” she continued. “Can you believe that? I wanted to kill myself.” When Fallon jokingly replied, “Poor Madonna,” the pop star added, “That’s like one of the best movies ever made. A teeny-tiny part of me regrets just that one moment in my life.”
While Madonna didn’t reveal exactly which Matrix role she was offered, Vanity Fair speculates that it was the role of Trinity, which was ultimately played by Carrie-Anne Moss. While Trinity died in The Matrix Revolutions, it was previously confirmed that Moss would reprise her role as Trinity in The Matrix Resurrections.
Notably, director Lana Wachowski recently revealed that she decided to resurrect both Trinity and Keanu Reeves’ Neo for the new film following the death of both her parents, noting, “My brain has always reached into my imagination and one night, I was crying and I couldn’t sleep, and my brain exploded this whole story.”
“And I couldn’t have my mom and dad, yet suddenly I had Neo and Trinity, arguably the two most important characters in my life. It was immediately comforting to have these two characters alive again, and it’s super simple,” she explained. “You can look at it and say: ‘OK, these two people die and OK, bring these two people back to life and oh, doesn’t that feel good.’ Yeah, it did! It’s simple, and this is what art does and that’s what stories do, they comfort us.” The latest trailer for The Matrix Resurrections shows the resurrected versions of Trinity and Neo, as well as introduces Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Morpheus, a role that was portrayed in the original films by Laurence Fishburne.
The Matrix Resurrections premieres in theaters and on HBO Max on Dec. 22.
