Even actor Daniel Craig thinks James Bond drinks more than anybody else should.
In a recent interview with Rotten Tomatoes, the No Time to Die actor was asked about whether Bond’s considerable consumption of alcohol impacted his duties as a secret agent. The question left Craig shaken, not stirred. “He’s never drunk. Have you noticed?” he said. “He’s got quite a constitution. I think it’s a gag. It’s a running gag.”
Since 1962’s Dr. No, Agent 007 has been known for a number of distinct traits, including a love for guns, women and fast cars. Though the character has evolved considerably over time, one thing that hasn’t changed is Bond’s drinking. Craig himself noted that he was once presented with a chart that detailed how much alcohol each Bond actor drank, with him at the top. However, he recognizes that this isn’t exactly a realistic standard. “I feel like it’s a sort of nice gag because of course, it’s ridiculous,” he said. “Nobody can drink that much and function and do all the things but he’s James Bond.”
No Time to Die is the fifth outing for Craig’s portrayal of Bond and the 25th in the series overall. The film was originally scheduled to come out in November 2019 but faced a number of setbacks due to the departure of key personnel and the spread of COVID-19. This created a wealth of anticipation from fans and helped No Time to Die break U.K. box office records upon its release.
The film is also the last for Craig, who will be moving on to other projects like the sequels to Rian Johnson’s Knives Out. His heartfelt goodbye coincides with the resolution of multiple plot points from the previous films, concluding many key characters’ stories. This, along with the recent purchase of Bond studio MGM by Amazon, has left fans questioning what the future of the series will entail. When asked about the chances of 007 making the leap to television, producer and James Bond rights owner Barbara Broccoli shot down the idea, saying, “We make films for the cinema. That’s what we do.”
In the meantime, fans who are saddened by the temporary end of 007 can reflect on the franchise through Being James Bond, a retrospective produced through Apple TV that chronicles Craig’s 15+ year journey in the role. Beyond that, fans can take comfort in knowing that Craig will miss playing Bond just as much as they’ll miss watching him onscreen.
No Time to Die is now in theaters.
