Riverdale: Sabrina’s Crossover Can Adapt Archie Comics’ Most Horrific Story

Ever since its first season, Riverdale has been home to some spooky dealings. Sure, the CW series never went so far as to actually confirm that monsters and magic exist in its universe, but it has tip-toed the line on several occasions. There have previously been hints of witchcraft, ghosts and even aliens, but Riverdale never fully crossed the line into the unexplained, but that is all set to change in Season 6.

It’s been confirmed that the next season of the series will feature Chilling Adventures of Sabrina‘s Kiernan Shipka, reprising her Netflix role as teenage witch Sabrina Spellman in an extremely-anticipated crossover event. Already, several details of Sabrina’s visit to Riverdale have been revealed, and the television series now seemingly has all of the elements to adapt one of the most popular horror stories from Archie Comics. It may finally be time for Riverdale to give fans Afterlife with Archie.

Afterlife with Archie is a comic series written by Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and illustrated by superstar artist Francesco Francavilla. The series began in 2013, preceding the premiere of Riverdale by four years. The comic book plunged fans into a far darker Riverdale that was overrun with zombies. It all began after Jughead tragically lost his dog. Unable to stay goodbye to his furry friend, Jughead asked his friend and resident witch Sabrina Spellman to perform a spell that would bring the canine back to life. Using a book known as the Necronomicon, Sabrina attempted to bring the dog back to life, but he instead returned as an undead creature. The dog then bit Jughead, who became the first in a plague of zombies.

The horror comic is beloved by fans, and it has been the hope of many that Riverdale would adapt the story, given its already dark and creepy vibes. Of course, while we don’t yet know what Riverdale‘s plans are for Sabrina, her arrival on the CW series is certainly bound to get fans talking, seeing as how the crossover could easily serve as the start of a zombie plague.

On Riverdale, Cheryl Blossom has seemingly been growing into some kind of witch, and now she is set to perform a spell on a member of her family that may mean life or death. We don’t yet know who that person is, but we can certainly take a guess: throughout the series, Cheryl has always been afflicted by the loss of her twin brother, Jason Blossom. She even, at one time, kept his preserved body close by, in her mansion. But now that she is dabbing in witchcraft, Cheryl may take things to the next level by attempting to bring him back to life with help from Sabrina. And, if the spell backfires, Jason could turn into Riverdale‘s first zombie. Oh, and the best part? Riverdale already teased zombie Jason back in Season 1, which means this may have been something planned for a very long time.

Since Riverdale, Afterlife with Archie and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina all share Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa as a writer and showrunner, one could see how all of these puzzle pieces fit together. Riverdale was already turned into a dystopian-like wasteland in Season 5. Now, it’s time to unleash the zombies.

Riverdale Season 6 premieres Tuesday, Nov. 16 on The CW.
