Funimation has confirmed that Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata’s highly anticipated follow-up to Death Note, Platinum End, will be simulcast on its streaming service.
The new series is scheduled to premiere in Japan on Oct. 8. Crunchyroll originally announced that the series would stream internationally as part of their subscription service’s fall lineup, and now Funimation has followed suit by confirming that supernatural thriller will also be simulcast on its streaming service. The new series will be directed by Kazuchika Kise, who previously worked on Made in Abyss and Blood: The Last Vampire, and Hideya Takahashi, who also worked on Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind and multiple entries within the To LOVE-Ru franchise.
Platinum End is the latest manga creation from the duo of Ohba and Obata, who are best known for their best-selling and critically acclaimed Death Note series, which was serialized from 2003 – 2006 in Weekly Shonen Jump. Death Note was successfully adapted into a popular anime series by One-Punch Man animation studio Madhouse in 2009, and not-so-successfully adapted into a live-action Netflix movie in 2017.
Ohba and Obata’s new series tells the story of Mirai Kakehashi, a high school student who has suffered through a life of abuse but is ultimately saved by a guardian angel named Nasse. Mirai begins to use to Nasse’s powers to correct the injustices he sees in his life, but these new abilities come with a catch: Nasse informs Mirai that God will retire in 999 days, and Mirai is now one of thirteen candidates who are competing to replace the deity as the new ruler of the world. Unfortunately for Mirai, the other twelve candidates are aware of this competition as well, and some of them are willing to use their new powers to eliminate the competition.
The new anime is the latest series to join Funimation’s fall lineup, which also includes the second seasons of Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon and Mushoku Tensei. The season also includes the latest episodes of on-going series, such as That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime, Scarlet Nexus, Obey Me and One Piece, which will air its landmark 1000th episode this November.
The Platinum End manga was first published in Jump Square magazine in 2016 and concluded in January of this year. The manga was localized into English and distributed internationally by VIZ Media.
