WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Only Murders in the Building Season 1, Episode 7, “The Boy from 6B,” now available on Hulu.
In Only Murders in the Building, the sleuths have been thrown for a loop at every single juncture. Charles (Steve Martin) and Oliver (Martin Short) are all over, scrambling for clues for the podcast over Tim Kono’s death, while Mabel (Selena Gomez) is compromising herself and getting attached to demons from the past. However, as they all finally get on the same page, the show drops a bombshell by revealing who actually killed Zoe.
Zoe’s death years ago has played a major role as it’s connected to Tim’s apparent suicide in the present. They were both friends, with Zoe dating Oscar, and Mabel and Tim having a sibling-like bond. It’s why the quartet pretended to be the Hardy Boys, investigating mysteries in the summer at New York’s Arconia hotel. That is, until it all fell apart as Zoe was pushed off the rooftop at a New Year’s Eve party, with Tim’s bad evidence landing Oscar in jail.
Seeing as Tim was trying to find the ring that was missing from Zoe’s hand, though, fans began speculating that he might have been trying to catch the real killer, which leads to the truth now emerging. It’s none other than Theo, Teddy Dimas’ deaf son, which is confirmed as he breaks into the podcasters’ room to spy on their evidence.
He quickly reports to Teddy that the team’s onto Zoe’s missing ring, with flashbacks confirming he gave it to her that night as he had a crush on her. Zoe often teased him, but when Teddy realized what happened, Theo had to forget about impressing her and get the ring back as it was something Teddy would make big money off on the black market.
Theo went to the rooftop and after Zoe and Oscar fought, Theo confronted her, trying to comfort Zoe but also trying to get his prized item back. Sadly, Zoe was emotional, hysterical and bitter that he was taking the trinket, which led to a shoving match where Theo accidentally pushed her to her death. Tim witnessed it all, but his intentions got stymied as Theo had already informed his dad about what happened.
Teddy ended up cornering Tim, making it clear he had money and power to kill not just Tim, but Mabel as well, coercing Tim to frame Oscar and cut Mabel off for her own safety. It’s a stunning turn of events as Theo’s stayed in the shadows mostly.
Theo did have feelings for Zoe, but she was too rash, playing Oscar and seducing Theo for fun. All this created a powder keg, which now paints Tim in a heroic light as he did try to help Mabel, leaving us wondering now if Teddy or Theo really took him out.
To see Theo contribute to Zoe’s tragedy, check out Episode 7 of Only Murders in the Building, available now on Hulu.
